No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

We got our first letter yesterday, too. He is very upbeat and has a good attitude. He is in the 900 division which has the toughest RDCs on base. Since they are the performance division, they have to be the best at everything. He said they are very hard on them, but it will just make him a better sailor. He spoke of the pride he felt the first time he put on the uniform and saw his name and US Navy side by side. I remember that feeling, too.

When son Eric PIR'd in Mar '07 he was a grad-and-go "across the street" so he had all weekend to spend with his mom and I. He also was master at arms for the division.....at dinner at Chili's that night he started telling us about being master-at-arms and trying to get the rest of the division to act as a team and follow instructions--- he was telling us about the things he used to say and yell and them....I've never laughed so hard in my life and my sides hurt for hours!! Your son is going to have some awesome stories to tell you....look forward to it!!!

We got our first letter yesterday, quite an event as you all well know. Chris is in Ship10/Div74, and is currently Master-at-Arms, though he said he wasn't sure how long he'd have the job, since there were some guys who just seem dead set against being part of the team, so it's more work for him.
Sounded very up-beat, and basically had no complaints.
Sure did put Momma's mind at ease ;)

Meghan, My son was in Bootcamp during last Christmas. There were some that were able to go off base to a host home on Christmas Day but they were recruits that were within a week or so of graduating. For the majority they were given the day off and served a special meal. They were able to call home around Christmas Day. Our call was Christmas Eve night and lasted about 20 minutes.

Sorry, once in BC they will keep them on base unless there is some official reason for them to be off base. Remember Xmas day is most likely the only day during "holidays" that they won't be training. The holidays are hard enough for a lot of young folks to be gone, I can't see the Navy making it harder on them by allowing them to walk around and see the other families together.

Got a call from the boy today found out when his Battle stations is going to happen. And also when he ships out from Great Lakes, don't know if he is a grad and go but he ships out to A school on Saturday Morning.

We're paying $139 a night which I didn't think was so bad considering we'd need two Navy Lodge rooms at $65

John & Mitch. We stayed at the Residence Inn and got the 1 bedroom, 2 room suite with a separate dinette and living room area with a pull out sofa/sleeper for my son's girlfriend who joined us. The room was great and we were treated really great too. They really catered to the Navy families. On Wed and Thurs nights before the Fri PIR, they had a free buffet with all kinds of stuff. We got to meet other Navy families too. All in all, the Res Inn would be highly recommended if you need the extra room. The cost was up there a little bit but we got the 3-way deal: airfare, car, and hotel for a great price.

David, and anyone else with a PIR of 1/08/10, I've started another group called PIR 1/08/10 (original huh) so that we can keep up with our wives on N4Ms!

We are Ship 06/ Div 911 with PIR on 2/5/10. My son will be playing the tuba with the Drum and Bugle Corps. The ladies on N4Ms are planning a dinner Thursday evening. Stay tuned.

We are staying at the Navy Lodge. Rooms are $65/night with no tax!
