No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Great words Glen!! As I've told many here, the first week or two seems to take forever, but time will go by much faster than you think and before you know it you'll at PIR! The more active you stay on the site the better prepared you'll be for not only the rest of bootcamp and PIR, but the transition to A-school and the fleet as well. It seem like yesterday that I was making the trip to RTC for my daughter's PIR....that was more than four years ago and the time has flown by!!!

All you Dads of kids in RTC....thinking about you in this season. Our son was in boot camp last Thanksgiving and Christmas and we had just moved away from our home and all our friends the day after he left home. Man that was a long few weeks when he first left. He's now stationed 3 hours away and last weekend he was home - we drove him by the apartment bldg we were in then and I pulled the truck up in front of the mailboxes there and asked him if he knew what those were. He just looked at me like I was on drugs - and I laughed and told him how we used to run out there when the mail man came to see if there was mail from him in boot camp. He kind of laughed.

The first few days are the hardest, then it seems to get gradually easier and before you know it you're heading to PIR and that's just unforgettable. It's a rite of passage for your whole family, and prepares you for what's coming.
Our son is heading to the Middle East shortly and I can feel another "rite of passage" coming for him and for our family. The difference now is we all know we can survive it, he's a more confident young man, even at only 19 and we've met a bunch of the kids he's serving with cause we had them here for Thanksgiving. He's doing what he was meant to do and it's important to him and to us and to our nation - what more can you ask of your son or daughter?

Hey we got the form letter today (postmarked 12/8) That might give you some idea about how slow the mail is. The boy's in Ship 04 div#76. He says they are doing well, the DRC's are pushing them to be the best so they can get more liberty after graduation.? LOL.. PIR 2/5/10 He had to pee and hopes to call soon. Glad to see he still has his sense of humor!

Just had a 40 minute phone call with Dan. He sounds great! My wife is out shopping with our daughter and is going to be so upset she missed it. But she'll be glad she didn't drag me along so I was here to talk to him, now we're even, I missed one of the calls. He said his division (3/50) got the athletic flag so they got calls, he said that was the toughest flag to get because it takes the most teamwork. I asked about hell week but said that's next week. They are on day 4-1-extended?, meaning 4th week first day but weekends don't count. They just finished Marlinspike. Halfway there!

Bob, that's too bad they wouldn't let her keep her rosary but at least she has her Bible. It was hard when we got our "sailor in a box" too but in the next few days you'll get your form letter from the Captain. At the very end, she'll have 3 lines to write on. As soon as you get her address and ship/division just start writing. Don't rely on the address your recruitor gave you. Sometimes they're wrong but your letters eventually get to them. Good luck to Rosie.

Bob, they should have let her keep the Rosary. She was very tired I am sure and scared and probably put anything that wasn't explicitly on the list in her box. My son sent his watch home, and that too is an allowed possession.

He shipped out last Tuesday, Dec 1. We got his box on Friday and we received his form letter today. It was filled out LAST Friday and postmarked on the 8th. His PIR is 2/5/10. He is in ship 06/div 911.

I received a bit of a surprise yesterday when Rosie's box of stuff arrived (she only left on Monday). I thought it would be another week or so before it showed up. One thing that surprised me was that they sent the rosary I gave her home. I thought the recruits were allowed to keep such small religious articles. From what I can tell all they let her keep was her Bible and a book of postage stamps. Still no form letter but I was able to get her address from her recruiter. Anyone else here have someone in Ship 12 DIV 078?

We received the "form letter' today from our son. He has been assigned to the 900 company/ Drum and Bugle Corps (Recruit Band I think they call it now). His graduation date is 5 Feb. He says everything is going well and is "actually pretty fun". He says it is no worse than the JROTC camps he attended so far.

Thanks. We're looking forward to the first "real" letter/phone call so we can see where his head is at and how he's doing. He likes hard work, and he likes being challenged.

Jim
