No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Jim,
There is a chance that they ask your son if he wishes to change jobs when they see his physical ability but as a rule when an individual is sent to bootcamp the Navy not only sets up bootcamp but also the "A" school seat for them. If they offer reclassification to everyone while in boot camp there would be a lot of Sailors waiting around for their schools.
Always throughout an individuals career there is opertunities to change ratings. I started off as a Signalman, changed to Quartermaster and now I am a Yeoman.
Don't let him get discouraged because new opertunities always arise.

Hey Chief, Thanks for joining, and thanks for serving.

How "cast in stone" is the A school guarentee? My son is in for AECF, but he's very athletic, and an excellent swimmer, and at 24, has a pretty good head on his shoulders. I can see him developing other career interests, possibly even in boot. What if he decides he'd really like to be a rescue swimmer, for instance?

I would like to say "Hello" to everyone. I am a Chief Petty Officer stationed at Philadelphia's Recruiting Command and if you have any questions feel free to contact me. I have been in the Navy for 17 years and may be able to help you out or point you in the right direction.

I used a connection I got from Facebook to learn my son's ship/division. He is in Ship 06/ Division 911.

Looks like PIR 2/5/10

Larry, good luck to your SAILOR! I remember all too well how it felt to get letters from home. One thing we are going to do is send some small notes to some of his shipmates that don't get mail. Its sad, but true. Some get no mail at all. Also, thank your son for his service. Shortly before my son left, he went to get his haircut, in preparation. The barber asked him if he was sure he wanted it cut off. He told the barber yes and why. As he was leaving, all the men in the barber shop stood up, shook his hand and thanked him for serving our country. What a welcome change from when I was in in the late 70's.

As the father of a new sailor (PIR 04DEC09) I can understand the emotions those of you who are just starting this journey have. I was exactly the same as all of you 9 weeks ago when my son left. Hang in there! Although the first few weeks seem like forever it will be over before you know it. We only got 2 calls and 3 or 4 letters the whole time John was in boot. They are very busy and only get to call if they earn it by the division doing well on something. I know you have all heard this before but write every day to you recruit. Send newspaper articles that you think would be of interest to your Ricky. We sent new clippings about his high school football team and pieces of gamer magazines that John said they were prized by everyone in his division. Yesterday I ups's his cell and Ipod to his "holding" address so we should be able to be in contact a little more regularly. Be ready to shed a few tears when you go to PIR and the first time you see some stranger thank them for their service. Remember this is thier journey and your job is to be as supportive and positive as you can. Thank your recruit from my family for their service to our country, be proud of your son or daughter. Congradulations on raising a fine young man or woman. I will be concentration on the AECF ET group now but am willing to answer any question any of you may have.

My son ships out Dec.14. Mom is starting to stress out, but is also glad he is leaving. I am proud that he has made the choice to serve his country. We are looking forward to going to PIR inFebuary.
