No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

The only issue is state specific documents aren't available at the legal office.

note that many of these details can be handled by your sailor through the legal department at their duty station. As an example, Eric got a military power of attorney so I could handle registering his SS here in Arizona while he was at sea on the Roosevelt.

One thing all should do when your sailor gets leave is the following:
I would make the recommendation to all to get a power-of -attorney signed so you can act on behalf of your sailor. Also, get a durable power-of-attorney for healthcare for your state. For instance, an "Advanced Directives" is the Maryland equivalent of a durable POA for healthcare. This is the last thing I did before taking him to the recruiting office last week. You can get the documents online for little cost at LegacyWriter.com
Your bank can notarize these for you. This will let you act on their behalf while they are off being sailors and if, God forbid, they were to get seriously ill or injured you would have the authority to act on their behalf

My previous reply was to an earlier post about 900 divisions.

I was in a Triple Threat company in 1976! Back them they still had service week and we spent our practicing while the regular recruits mowed grass, painted rocks and worked in the galley. We did a couple of parades and got some good food as a result. We also didn't have quite as much PT as the regular companies (as they were called back them) did.

Navy Times:

EVERY SAILOR SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

Boot camp
If you’ve been in the Navy for a while, you might be surprised how different the boot camp experience is for today’s recruits, and how it will change further as work continues at Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy officials just cut the ribbon to open two brand-new barracks at Great Lakes, named for the destroyers Arleigh Burke and Hopper. Here’s what you need to know about what’s happening to boot camp.

1It’s really new. The buildings and barracks from the 1960s and before are disappearing. Instead, recruits will use brand-new buildings and trainers during their eight-week induction to the Navy family.

2It’s a little “fleet.” The 13 barracks where recruits stay and work are like self-contained ships, the Navy says, named after real-life ships from the fleet. Recruits sleep, eat and train in the same building, which the Navy says helps make basic training more efficient. For years, moving around the base, from barracks to chow, for example, meant Navy recruits used to march as much as 25 miles per week —
compared to the 22 miles per week marched by Army recruits.

3The base is changing. Great Lakes itself has expanded as part of the 12-year, $770-million renovations.

The base now has a public area for visitors and weekly graduations, a central area for medical and administration offices, and a small er, separate campus specifically for processing new arrivals.

4It’s Navy green. One new part of the base, Camp John Paul Jones, includes some of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the Navy, certified “gold” by the U.S.

Green Building Council in August.

The base’s final barracks, named for the frigate Reuben James, is planned as a “silver” building.

5It’s not quite finished yet. Still to come are improvements to roads and utility lines; a new parking garage; and a new visitors’ center, according to a Navy announcement. Great Lakes needs to accommodate thousands of visitors per week who come to see new sailors graduate.

Officials hope the work is finished by November 2010.

My wife got a 9 min. call from Pat today. So good to hear from him. He's starting his 3td week. Has to have one wisdom tooth out, he said they take it easy on you for 2 days. He claims he really having fun. Also he's is grad and go, so we won't see much of him at PIR. Please let me know if anyone else is in ship 13 Div 052.

My son got to GL Monday night. He had been texting me all the night before and the next morning while waiting on his flight to leave Dallas. They let him call us from his cell about 11pm before putting everything in the box.
His recruiter got me the address Tuesday morning. I'm still trying to get the division #, but I don't think we need that to mail him letters.
The box came today, Friday. It's seems like everything is rolling right along so far.

Thanks to everyone in the past who's posted. It sure makes it easier to sleep knowing just a little of info about whats going on.

If I didn't have his address I would be making some calls too.
