No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

According to everything we've read, and assumed...lol, our son Chris should start Boot Camp tomorrow. We can't wait to hear from him again, even though we know it won't be for another 2wks, and even that is a "maybe", and will be another brief call. I'm expecting "the box" in the next day or two. I started a letter the day after he left...and as soon as I get his address, will be shipping that off to him, and will distribute it to friends and family so they can reach out as well. Our son has left home before, he did 2 seperate years in Americorp, but this is different. We knew at the end of an Americorps stint that he'd be returning home after 10mos. And he'd still be a kid, sorta :) We know that with this experience, "the kid" is gone, period, and our son is now fully making the transition to a young man, where before he was sort of dipping his toe in the water.
Can't wait to hear his stories of boot, or just to hear how he's doing. As everyone here knows...it's going to be a tough couple of months for ALL of us.

Frank, thank you so much for sending that over. We thought we might see our son but he was at a different church for Thanksgiving. But we used it to imagine he was there. We got a phone call from him from St Michael's Anglican church and he said the food was great. thanks again.

TerryB, did you see this video of the church dinner? Maybe you can see your recruit!

Does anyone have a recruit leaving for Great Lakes on 04/12?

When our son first expressed interest in joining the Navy, I suggested that he sit down and watch all of the episodes of Carrier. It's availabe from Netflix and a variety of other sources. Pretty good insight into life in the Navy aboard the USS Nimitz. He watched all 10 episodes, so I know it gave him at least SOME idea of what Navy life was going to be like.
Last night my wife decided that she wanted to watch some of it as well, to get a better idea of what our son would eventually encounter, maybe not on a carrier, but regarding Navy life in general.

It's not a bad idea, actually, and I highly recommend it.

We got an unlimited time phone call from our son today on Thanksgiving. It really made our day! He and a bunch of other recruits were able to go to a local church where they were fed an unbelievable Thanksgiving dinner. He sounded great and is anxious for PIR on 12/4. Unfortunately, he is a grad-and-go and will have to leave the very next day to A-school in San Antonio, TX. Oh well. At least we'll see him for 7-10 days over Christmas.

Our son is spending the day with a family near Chicago today. He called and said he was there with 4 friends from his div 014. Sounds great and happy. Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Hey Brian, we got the call at 2:30am as well...wonder if your daughter and our son Chris will end up in the same ship/div.

The officer that swore Chris in said that he was lucky to be going to boot over the holidays, and that for Christmas, there was a good chance that he'd spend that day at someone's home. Hope that happens for them...
