No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Ricky - Div. 386 and 387 just finished battle stations around 8am CST. I have heard that the calls start coming in around 2pm GL time. Good luck to you and your family.

Our thoughts are also with the families at Fort Hood. It is such a shame.

Hard to believe what happened down there at Ft Hood. Our prayers will be with those families. I just joined the group and am getting a little more familiar with the site. My son is currently at BC, ship 11, div 018 and is scheduled for PIR on 12/4. Any good ideas on flights, hotels, etc. Thanks

Very tragic incident at Fort Hood. Thoughts to all...this life is hard enough without that type of complication.

I just wanted to stop by and wish everyone good luck and a safe trip to PIR 11/06. Congratulations on your new Sailors! Our son goes through Battle Stations tonight and I am sure we will not get a lot of work done until we hear from him sometime tomorrow.

In my research of us going to PIR there is no toll in Wisconsin, but there is in Illinois. The toll from the Wis/Ill border to Great Lakes is 2 dollars.
Hope that helps.

Jim-- a lot of these topics have been covered in some detail in the various posts in the PIR- Tips, Hints, and Helps group. I flew into Midway and O'Hare for my two PIR's so cannot speak for the Milwaukee roads and tolls. The shuttles run from most of the larger hotels in the area to the base. Best to call your hotel and ask if they have a shuttle service....it was running about $5/person a couple of years ago, but my memory is hazy. There has been a ton of debate about driving on base vs the shuttle....I've done both and the shuttle is the only way to go in my opinion unless you have special needs.

We heard that getting to Great lakes from Chicago has toll roads and you should make sure you keep some change with you for the tolls. We will be come from Milwaukee are there toll roads from there to Great Lakes?
We also heard about a shuttle service to take you to PIR. Where do we catch the shuttle from? Is the shuttle free or do they charge a fee and is it worth it as opposed to driving in?

How lucky you are to live so close! We will fly in from CA on 12/3. It will be like a new planet to us especially if there is snow. Pat loves pictures of his dog and wants to know everything about home. Has anyone heard about Larry G. son and his heart murmur?

Welcome David and Paul. Thanks to your son and daughter for their service to our country. The time will go by pretty quickly although at first it seems to crawl. Our recruit will PIR in exactly one month from today on 04DEC09. We are lucky enough to live just a 5 hour drive from base so we will travel down to spend Thanksgiving with him and then be beck for PIR one week later. We got the second phone call from him last Friday and the difference from the first call was substantial. He sounds way more confident already. Still wants boot to be over but he can see the light at the end of the tunnel now and that helps a lot. Write as often as you can. He told us that the letters are almost as good as hearing our voices. I write at least 5 times a week even if its only a few lines. Being that he just graduated high school in June and was a football player I send him all the newspaper articles about his old team's playoff run.
