No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Larry- welcome to the group. There is a wealth of information here. My son PIR's 04Dec and that first 2 weeks until he called was really hard.
Nick - the phone card we sent wasn't any good there either. John bought one at the NX and we sent another AT&T card.
Mike - John said they had to earn the phone call. I'm sure Wes will call ASAP.

We haven't received a call either. I'm worried that the phone card he took with him is not working. I may try to send Pat an AT&T card as someone said earlier. Let us know if you hear anything

I've heard that some recruits from various ships and divisions have been calling home over the past few days and I was wondering if anyone having a recruit in Ship 11 Division 16 has received a call recently. We have not. We thought sure we would get a call this past Saturday or Sunday, but we received none. The last we heard from Wes was in a letter we received last Thurday. It was great, but we're anxiously awaiting a phone call.

Thanks Michael,

My son is not always the best communicator. He very well may know as well. He is in Div 373. I know he wanted ET but did not want a carrier. I think that was part my fault. Being a retired submariner, I have always liked the small guys.

Yes, FC's are trained to specific equipment mostly found on the Aegis type vessels. I believe he will be happy either way.

Yes, I am heading to GL on Wed. My wife's parents live in Chicago and she is already there visiting. Hope you have a great time and thanks for providing the info.

Randy, my son is in Div. 368, scheduled for PIR Oct. 30. He enlisted under the Advanced Electronics and Computer Systems program. I got a letter a couple days ago indicating that he has already been told that he will be an ET. He had been leaning toward FC, so was a little disappointed intitally, but was told that the options for ETs are much broader (basically can serve on any large ship, including Carriers) whereas apparently FCs are limited to just a few types of ships. At least that's what he's been told. I was surprised that he already knows...I too was under the impression that the ET/FC split wouldn't happen until after the initial phase of A school. Not sure how or why this happend, but assume it's based on the needs of the Navy.

They should be done with Battle Satations by now...I believe it was was last night.... so am hoping we get a call sometime today.

Looking forward to heading out to GL on Thurs!

John's first letter came Saturday. He sounded pretty good in the letter. He says it's hard training and he is still deciding if this was the best or worse decicion of his life! :) I'm confident it will be the latter by the time he is out of boot. He also said how much he missed mom and dad and even his younger brother. He said he is counting the days until he can get home on leave and get a home cooked meal. There was one troubling thing though. His letter was 3 pages and the top one third of one page was missing. We were wondering if the recruit's mail is opened and read? If so would they censor by cutting out that part of the letter?

Hey guys,
The recruiter is the last one to really have a good answer. Once they get them in and through boot camp, they are done. My son will PIR 10/30 and then off to ET/FC A school. A school for ET/FC is the same for the first 3 to 4 months then they split off into their respective rate for another 3 to 5 months. Who determines what rate they will be? The needs of the Navy, but they have a better shot at doing what they want based on class standing in Apprentice Technical Training. There also may be some time between Boot Camp and A school depending on when classes are forming. After A school, they will be off to a C school depending on their rate and the the needs of the Navy.

Our son is in the same track. He was told he would be at great lakes at least until next summer. His PIR is 12/4 so we will find out then. The recruiter didn't ever have many details except that he left on 10/5

Ricky,
Thanks for the response. I guess I may need to go have a talk with his recruiter and see if I can fill in some of the blanks.

Jim, my son is on the same track and we were told the same thing that after A school he goes straight to C school I guess we will find out as soon as our son does his PIR is 11/13 and from there he goes to A school we don't know if he is going ET or FC so only the powers that be can determine what is to be as long as he is happy and gets through it with good grades.
