No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Our son Christopher reports for active duty on Nov 24th, which is coming up on us quickly, now under the 30 day mark. I was surprised when he initially signed up and they gave him that date, as it means bootcamp over Thanksgiving AND Christmas. I've read that boot camp is roughly 9wks? If he reports for active duty on a Tuesday, does that mean his 1st officially starts on the following Monday?

He has enlisted as an Advanced Electronics Tech, and things he'll be taking the ET track as opposed to the FC track. I'm not sure when he has to decide which track he takes. We are also unclear on his C schools. His recruiter indicated he "...could be at Great Lakes for 2yrs.", but that doesn't sound right based on everything else I've read and heard.
It sounds like he goes through Basic, then on to A school right there at Great Lakes. After A school, I've read that ETs go out to their assigned fleet, and then go to C school at a later time, while FTs go to C school right after A school?...can anyone validate that?

I'm sure this is the first of a many questions I'll be posting. Glad I found this site.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Wow, finally a letter came today! He sounds great and is really happy with his decision. Pat says once P-week was over, it got better. He did say that there is alot of yelling!. He is Starboard Watch leader and passed his swim test the first time. He is from Calif. so he better! Said a guy in the rack next to him is from our area so they have something in common. He sounds very Happy!!

Nick - I wouldn't be overly concerned. From what my wife and I have read the call can come anytime.

Larry, you got a call? We have yet to hear from Patrick. Now I'm a little concerned since they went in at the same time. Hopefully he will call soon. That's a good idea to send the large envelope and the AT&T card. I don't remember the kind he took with him. I pray all is well.

Larry,
Nothing to worry about. He sounds very homesick and is gaining his strength from your letters in a very foreign environment. He is also in the middle of the break down stage where the RDC's break down the recruit before rebuilding him. The letters really help him, but also remember, he has a drawer that is approx 2 inches deep x 6 " wide by 10" long to keep all those letters in. All the rest of the space he has must be in accordance with the bunk plan. When you hear of the the bunk inspections, this is the area that is getting inspected and let me tell you, these inspections are to the most minute detail. Thus, the reason for the big envelope is to make space. Just keep reinforcing that it does get easier. This is all a big head game and if you can identify with that, you are set.

Well good luck and maintain that support. I will be heading to GL this coming Thurs for my Nick's PIR, 30 Oct. He will be 4th generation Navy.

John finally got to call home last night. It's been 2 weeks to the day since we saw him last. It was good to hear his voice but he sounded different to me. His voice was a little shakey. He said he missed us and his brother a lot. I asked him if it was harder than he expected and he said no. Also said he is tired of getting yelled at. The phone card we sent with him wont work there so we are going to send him an AT&T phone card today. He also said he needed us to send a larger envelope so he could send all the mail he has received back home. After the phone call was over I told my wife I wasn't sure if I felt better or worse. It's hard to hear your son's voice shake. The last thing he said was to keep sending letters.

Our son Patrick is in ship 07 div 014 with PIR dec 4th. Close but not together. we haven't heard from him since the late night phone call and form letter. We're hoping for a phone call this week or maybe a letter. We keep writing so when he finally gets mail he will have alot!

Bob - Congratulations and my sincere thanks to your daughter! My son graduated with 848 last friday. It was really an awesome sight was it not. We were fortunate to get the whole weekend with my son. He was on liberty right after graduation.
We drove from Texas. Left the hotel, Navy Lodge, at 6:10am. We probably waited in traffic for 30 - 40 minutes. We were in our seats in the lower section in plenty of time. I would suggest shooting for being at the gate at 6am to avoid most of the traffic. People really got crazy about cutting in line after 6:30. We had someone in our vehicle who needed a wheelchair so we were able to get handicapp parking. The RDC's really catered to us at the HC parking area. It was an honor to be in their presence.

I was very impressed at this group of our nation's new leaders. May our Lord bless, protect, and lead every one of them for His glory!
