No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

John's letter came today. His PIR is 04Dec09. There was a two line note telling his brother to make sure to bring his ID, that he was sorry he didn't get a chance to call home and that he loved his mother and me. We have made our reservations at Springhill Suites. Let the countdown begin!

My son Patrick left on Oct 4 and we heard from him on the 5th. Got the box on Thurs 10/8. That the fastest mail we'll ever get. Yes, we both teared up a little. He had written a message on the inside of the box. Said he was okay. He is in Ship 07 Div 014. He finished P week and Week 1. I hope all is well. He was in great shape when he left. I hope it helped! PIR is Dec. 04. As a Southern CA family where it was 100 deg today, I think we will freeze!!

One more note; during PIR we stayed at Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center, #1 Lake Front, Zion, IL 60099, phone (847) 625-7300, $84 tell them you are in town for the Navy PIR its only 13 miles north of the base, NO TRAFFIC, you are coming from the oppisite direction than everyone else!
Also, Navy Pier gives many discounts for Navy personell so if you have time and they are up to it take a trip there for dinner, traffic is not so good take the train if you can.

Do not miss PIR! It was a great experience and yes you will see many changes in your son or daughter as they move through the Naval process not only at Boot Camp but as they continue in the Naval programs.
My son's PIR was in May 2009, he went directly into Pre-BUDS and then into BUDS in SD. Unfortunetly he DOR'ed due to knee injuries but was invited to come back and try again in two years. He is now in the Riverine program and headed to VA soon to train with the Marines. We have been so proud of his decisions along the way.
He also gained a lot of weight and muscle mass since going in bck in April. It is shocking how they can adjust to working out so quickly. Also, my son was one of the top swimmers in pre-BUDS but the instructors have a way of equaling out the field so you may want to tell him to stay closer to the pack during those swims.
Also during PIR weekend make sure not to over plan the weekend, just let them relax and catch up with friends and family. They will need that RR time. Make sure to bring their cell phone and PC so that can reconnect to their friends. Remember no cell phones on base or at the entrance of the base.
God Bless and take plenty of pictures you will go back to them many times during those periods when you are missined them.

Mike, Did the letter come in the box or seperately? John is ship 11 div 022.
He arrived at Great Lakes last Thursday 10/8. We will be making reservations as soon as we know the PIR date. Hopefully we will get that letter tonight. I agree this site has helped me deal with this a LOT. I'm not a very religious man but I have been asking God to watch over him.

Larry, it sounds like you're kinda on the same schedule we are. We received the note from Wes last night, along with the letter from the NTC commanding officer. It was great to hear from him. I think we read his note several times and each time we read it, we pulled something out of what he said. The biggest thing we saw was that he still had a positive attitude and that means a lot to us. It seemed as if my wife and I were opening a Christmas gift when we opened the letter. Our emotions were strengthened once again. The tears are still flowing, but not as often. It is still very difficult for me to talk or think about Wes without becoming emotional. Wes' PIR is December 4th and we've already made hotel reservations. Hang in there. We'll make it. Thanks to all for the positive comments and encouragement. May God Bless all our Sailors and their families!

John's box was sitting on the porch last night when I got home. Took it in the house and put it on the table and my wife and I just looked at it for a while. Finally I said to her "It's just his clothes in there lets see if he got a chance to write a note". No such luck. There was nothing but his clothes in there. That was kind of a let down but the box actually was not emotional for us. We knew he was safe and in good hands. Really kicking myself in the butt for not sending his cell phone with him. No call when he got there and no note in the box. I'm sure he was busy is all. Been a week today since we dropped him off at the MEPS. Seems like a year.
