No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

On more comment. It is worth it to get there as early as possible. Cars are searched randomly. I was lucky to get through after a 5 minute wait. Meanwhile occupants of some cars were asked to leave the vehicle while it was being searched. Some searches included trunk and under the hood inspection. I guess it also depended on how the dogs reacted when they were walked around your vehicle.

Jim failed to mention the rules. Absolutely NO PICTURES unless they are taken INSIDE where the ceremonies are being held. Cameras will be confiscated and/or film, disk will be destroyed! I watched 2 people go through this AFTER the ceremonies. Talk about a heartbreak.

Also, the view from the upstairs balcony is much better especially if your sailor is in the 900 performance division. That division is split up in sections during performance and you may not have a clear view if you are on the wrong side of the hall.

Raul, my son ran battle stations on the Tuesday evening before graduation, so tonight might be the night ... my fingers are crossed for you ... and, yes, you'll get a call from him telling you that he's a sailor, all going well.

Are we supposed to get a call from our sailor after Battle Stations? He is graduating this Friday (10/2) and we haven't heard.

If anyone is looking for a good hotel, I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lake Forest. It was about 10 minutes from the main gate.

Ron, he mentioned he'd met you ... thanks for the compliment, he's turning out just fine!

I was hoping to see some of the dads, but things were just way too hectic. Glad to see you had a wonderful experience, too.

Edward - We got a call at 4:15pm. It came on my cell and it went dead on his end immediately. He thankfully called us back from an adjacent phone and we had a nice conversation. He sounds the same, said they are in Week 3-1, he is amazed they don't do PT every day and said the food was good. It was awesome his mom was home too and she got to hear him, that has calmed her down immeasurably.
Raul - I am very interested in anything you put on here about your experience at the Springhill Suites. Our son's PIR is 10/30/09 and we are booked there also. Hopefully for our sake you have an awesome time, that you've experienced short rides, that you sleep well, eat well and enjoy the PIR. Oh...and some stranger walks up and gives you $100 in appreciation for the big grin you have on your face after seeing your boy for the first time in weeks! When I looked at the MapQuest the hotel appeared to be 5-6 miles from base.

My son's PIR is this Friday (10/2). We are very anxious to see him. We are staying at the Springhill Suites in Waukegan. Does anybody know far the motel is from the base? Is there somewhere to eat on the base or should we eat ahead of time? With some luck we will be with him most of the weekend.

My wife was hot at me i'm still getting that sour look as i write this so if i just stop writing you can guess what happen. She said why didn't i call to put her on threeway i said i was worried he'd have to hang up she's been dying just to hear his voice so she's a little hurt. But we really can't wait for PIR now it can't get here fast enough.

Hey i got to hear from my son today to i almost didn't answer cause the id read payphone and i was running out. He is in div370 as well i was screaming his name like he couldn't hear me and i had a brain fart couldn't think of what i had plan to ask. But he is doing well got a 5.0 perfect score on a couple of exams so he's good, said he has a surprise for us and to make sure we bring the camera.
