No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Did hear from the boy on Sunday. Seems that everything is progressing properly. Although he sounds sick he says he's ok. Looks as if nothing keeps them from going forward. Cannot wait for Oct 2nd. I'm sure it will be one of our proudest moments in all of our lives. Not sure how much time he will have with us but we will take what we can get.

My sisters were wanting to attend, which would have made our party six people. I sent a letter to my son advising his aunts would like to attend. He wrote me back in the next letter telling me he got approval to include them on his guest list. I don't know who he spoke to, but there didn't seem to be an issue. Unfortunately, my sisters' jobs dictated otherwise and they can not attend.

For what it's worth, we had 5 of us at PIR in January. We arrived early, they never asked how many of us there were. We were prepared to have our extra guest wait until all other guests were admitted, but no one ever said a word and we just made our way thru the line, checking IDs, etc and went in and sat down. No issue...but I wasn't counting on that happening. the 5th guest was prepared to wait in the truck if she needed to.

Garry...having done this each of the last two years, it is pretty firm at 4 guests only. The seating is very limited for PIR and so they have to be strict. Now...even though they tell you not to ask, you could always try e-mailing RTC with the request and see what they say, though the last person I advised to do this got a curt 'no'. I would not in any way have your recruit ask...as they have been told not to ask, and so them asking could get them into a little hot water with their RDCs. Something I have heard some suggest is to have your recruit find a shipmate in the division that has a free ticket and have them put your additonal guest on their list. The problem that I see with that is the lag time in communicating the plan back and forth. Might be worth a try though.

Something else to keep in mind...the PIR is just a short part of the weekend. Just because the guest cannot get in to see the graduation does not mean they cannot go with you and have a chance to spend the weekend with your grad on liberty.

Garry i just attended my sons PIR this last friday and they were very strict on the limit of 4 per graduate.

Does anyone know what it means when they say that only 4 visitors are "guaranteed" a seat at graduation? We have five that would like to attend. If a fifth person shows up what is the possibility of them getting in?

Andrew...FC is a great rating. It is the rating I was while in...I went in as an AQ (Aviation Fire Control Tech...the rating does not even exist anymore), then in A school, cross rated to FT (Previous name for the Fire Control Tech rating). The difference between ET and FC are not much when it comes to training and skills. They both get basic electricity and electronics as a starter then learn electronics troubleshooting and maint. The only real difference is the gear worked on. FCs will work on radar and guidance systems related to specific weapons systems. The ETs work on the nav radars, radio gear, etc. Either rating (FC & ET) are good ratings...requiring good, solid electronics technician skills to perform. But, as a former FC, I am partial to the Fire Controlman rating myself. hehe.

I heard from my son this evening. His division finished 3rd in the Captain's Cup, so he's very happy! He told me he got his orders for A school this week ... Fire Controlman ... he's very happy! He went in hoping for ET, but met a FCC while in boot, who sold him on his rating (LOL!). He told me Battle Stations is next Tuesday @ 2200 and we should get a call late Wednesday morning or early afternoon. He said his division is doing "okay," but they still can't march worth ... well, you know what I'm saying!

Six days to PIR ... can't wait!

Hey, I got a phone call from Zach today! He said he was down with the flue, but is back on his game! Hell week starts Monday, and he sounded nervous about that. I reminded him that in four weeks he will be on to bigger and better things. I also told him that after this week they will be treated a lot better.

I just hope that's true.

It was nice hearing his voice again, but it was tough to say good by.
