No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Go another letter from my son yesterday. He said he is excited about getting his teeth pulled this week because you can watch ESPN SportCenter while waiting. He has made some friends. RDC has been helping them learn to make their beds alot lately!! Something about talking in line???! Also said the pressure to make them quit is on. He echoed what all say about writing letters. They treasure those letters. He said he gets more mail than anyone in his div. His mother and I write him every day. He is just finishing up his second week of actuall training this week. They got their camo stuff last week. He is really starting to feel like a soldier. God Bless my son.

Suzanne and Dick,
Any other tips you have for us going to PIR? Navy Lodge - good, thats where we are staying, full moon cafe - will remember that. Did either of you go to Navy Pier or anywhere else in Chicago that you would recommend?

To George and Eddie...

George, what a bummer for your son! Tell him not to see it as a failure only a blip! He will definitely have to back up and take another run at it! (Get a job with health insurance!) then, get back up on that horse. HELP HIM MAKE A PLAN TO GET PAST THIS...SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO!

Eddie, God bless you...somehow they transform. They have to know going in that it is mostly a headgame for the first two weeks. Drill Sergeants always need to literally break the old habits to teach them a new, safer way for the greater good. It is ok. That is what gives them confidence. Once they have that confidence and they are trained OMG look out! It is a good idea to watch everything on YouTube and get some of those Crucible videos and watch the head games. That helps them not take it so personally and realize what it takes to get through the training. Take care!

George, I am sorry to hear about your son's medical situation. I hope he can get it corrected. I agree that they should have caught this during the MEPs physicals if the surgery was disclosed. I know they investigated each of my daughter's surgeries and even had my wife and I write up a desription of one of them before they would accept her. Somebody was asleep at the wheel, it sounds like.

Well Dads I got some bad news today. My son who was on his way to week 4 called and told his mother that he is being separated from the Navy. Apparently when he was younger (around 11 or 12) he had surgery for a calcium growth in his sinus cavity. The Doc who performed the surgery told us that it may grow again or it may stay the way it is......well it grew back. He went to have a CT and they finally broke the bad news to him. His mother stated that he was basically in tears and sounded really heart broken that he has to come home. The Navy has apparently told him that they are going to separate him and not give him a medical discharge. Also if he gets another surgery to correct the problem that he may try again in another year. My frustration is why they didnt inquire about this while in the DEP. I was really looking forward to PIR but now have to cancel my plans. If it wouldve been brought up back then I couldve had him get the surgery while he was still on my insurance, man that sucks!!! But hey it all happens for a reason and I just have to make sure he gets home ok and from there we will work on the issue at hand. May God Bless all your young men and women and good luck to them all...

Eddie,

Completely understandable that you are aprehensive about this decision of your son's. Boot camp is not to be taken lightly...it is a process to both train and weed out. But, it is a proven way to build US Sailors. Admin said it perfectly below regarding what he knew the Navy was going to do for his kids. And the Navy is going to do the same for your son too.

You have every right to be proud of your son. And thank him for making the decision he has. We are a lucky collection of fathers (and mothers...lol) all having our children's willingness to serve their nation in common, don't you think?

Hey Eddie...if truth be known (speaking from practical experience here...) you are probably more worried about him at Great Lakes than HE IS!!! LOL
