No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Will do! We will be there throughout the weekend, leaving early Monday morning. Southwest has pretty decent prices out of Denver...the cheapest I found anyway.

Raul,

With regards to the final verification of PIR...there are a couple of milestones. The actual PIR date is set rather early for the company. The form letter you receive within the first couple of weeks will list the PIR date, as well as info about attending PIR as parents. That is where you learn of the PIR date for the division. After that, it is all dependant on your son staying with his division. This is less and less questionable as time goes by...so in week 3 there is a greater chance of him being set back than during week 6 or 7...know what I mean? There is never really a sure thing until they finish battle stations, however.

It is not always discipline that can set someone back. A broken arm or leg...serious illness...anything that causes your recruit to have to miss too much training, can get them set back. They have to get certain elements of training, and so the Navy will hold them back and place them in another division in order to finish. While this plays havoc with our travel plans...it is absolutely necessary for your recruit and his development.

But...keep in mind...most recruits finish with their division. The vast majority. RTC states very clearly that your recruit will be allowed to make phone calls in order to inform you of any of these division changes or setbacks. So, if you have not heard otherwise...plan on the original PIR date. And silence is not bad news in this case...do not fall into the trap of worrying because you have not heard anything. If you have heard nothing, then PIR is right on schedule.

Once a recruit finishes Battlestations, they will graduate (with a few very drastic exceptions)...as they have completed and passed all essential training. So getting the after-battlestations-call is the most final verification you will get. However, this can be the very week of graduation...so do not wait until you get it to make travel plans...you may not get rooms or flights.

LOL...The last call I got from my daughter was a day late because she had been SIQ the day before when her division got their call. But...still upbeat and quite happy, though sick. Lots of sick and dentally challenged recruits in boot camp...especially from about week 2-6. Lots of wisdom teeth pulled in boot camp as well...actually very common.

Suzanne, Congrats!! To you and especially your daughter. Now prepare to meet a grown young woman on Friday.

We are going to have a great PIR...and I am really looking forward to the ceremony, considering it is on 9/11. My son graduated from boot camp last year on 9/12...and they did not do anything special because of 9/11...so not sure if they will this year, but I suspect they will.

Have a great trip and a great time with your recruit. Perhaps we will see you. I will be the proud, smiling dad...of course there will be a lot of those! I'll be on the lookout for proud, smiling moms.

John,
My son was also SIQ with his wisdom teeth out as well and he also sounded great. Do you have any idea as to when we will get the final verification for PIR?

My son ship 04 Div 846 PIR 10-2 got to call this week (10 minutes) and then I got 2 letters. He was SIQ (sick in quarters) 2 days due to having his wisdom teeth pulled (in boot camp no less) he still sounded great, and is on track for graduation.

Reading the posts in here make my time in his boot camp easier... :-)

I remember when we first left the base with my son on liberty after graduation...he said, "Am I supposed to be out here? I feel like I am going to get into trouble for being here...it is weird being able to go out without someone telling me what to do...and reading the menu at the restaurants...he was overwhelmed with choices and the first thing he wanted was a meal at Cracker Barrel! lol

It is amazing how much the time at bootcamp changes them. God bless them all!
