No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Well yesterday we got Zach's address! The wife had to call me at work to tell me his address. I already had two letters written, so I printed them and got them in the mail.

When I got home I checked the mail, and almost fell over to see a letter from him!!!!! I honestly didn't expect him to get a letter off for at least two weeks, so I was very surprised.

He seemed in good spirits, and still has a good sense of humor. He said it was tough, but he was handling it well. He also joked by saying he hasn't been yelled at yet, but it's only a matter of time. He was in great shape when he went in, so the psychical part of BC won't be hard for him, but getting up anytime before noon will be his Achilles tendon. LOL

Seriously it was good to hear from him.

Take a lot of toll booth change...correct change, I overpaid and two years later getting nasty-grams from the IL Toll Authority...but, they are paid.

Admin is right, when I went to boot camp back in 1981 the first few weeks were eat, sleep and live the Navy way, we didnt get to make phone calls home unit about week five and that was if you earned it, I'm sure times are different and we still haven't heard from my son who is on ship #03 div 349, my wife asks me if this is normal and I tell her it is, we can wait to hear from him and see him graduate, but until then I know its the navy way.
Be patient and the letters will come soon.
congrats to all of the sailors graduating and all the families supporting them, God Speed to all.

To all new bootcamp parents---It is very rare to get additional calls until weeks 3 or 4. Your sailors are very busy for the first few weeks learning how to be sailors... a major goal of RTC to wean your kids off of home and to cut to apron strings that tie them to home. They need to start thinking in terms of their shipmates and the Navy first and not about home. It may sound cold, but this is a deadly serious job and your children cannot and must not think about home when confronted with conditions that require immediate response. BE PATIENT!! If there was a problem you would hear about it.
