No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Well, you're not going to believe this, but we just got a letter from Ian stating he has yet to start processing. He has learned to make a rack, fold a raincoat and clean the head. He said he's enjoying playing "follow the leader", too! By the tone of the letter, it sounds like he's really enjoying himself, so far. Anyone else get a letter?

I'm sure you've got this covered, but have you made sure to order a DVD of PIR? Make sure you get one on the way while they are available. HooYah!

Congrats to Josh, David. You are rightfully proud of your son. He understands your situation and knows that you would have been there had you been able to. Besides, you were with him anyway, I am sure. Tell Josh congrats from us here as well, and thank him for his service and committment.

Thanks Admin, precisely what I have done with the numbered letters. That and the date.

I would print photos at the end of my letters, (all written in the compouter), she loved them, some from when she was a kid, some from me in Nam, and just random stuff. She enjoyed photos from the All Star Game, I did not orint them at high quality but she knew when she was finished reading my letter there would be 2 to 3 pages of photos. That worked for us, whatever you do write often, every other day or so as that really is their only contact with the outside, I know Molly shared the photos with her shipmates and even showed some to the Petty Officers. Any of you who have ever been in the military in a situation without comoputers or cell phones, real mail was the life blood that got you through it, even if you have nothing to say just talk about your local sports team or the light stories on the news, just so they get some contact from outside. When the resupply helicopters would drop supplies to us in the jungkle every 4 days the first thing we went for was not the food or water, it was the mail bag! There are actually groups that write letters to our troops over seas so they get some sort of mail. the only thing i would say about the content is make it all positive, nothing negative, they have enough of that and need this time to be just about the good stuff. M y moim was in the hospital for 3 weeks of Molly's boot camp but she never knew until after PIR, we had agreed on that before hand and it worked fine. Now that she is on "hold" for A school we don't apply that rule anymore, we will wait and see what happens when she does sea duty if we will reinstate that rule, but you get the idea SEND LETTERS!!!!

Hint.....number your letters in the order they were written...that way they can read them in order if they receive 4 on the same day.......

Roger that folks. I got Tyler's address yesterday, and have 4 letters going out today. I am also e-mailing lots of family members his information in hopes that they send letters as well. As far as pics go, I just insert them on a typed letter using MS Word.

Ditto to what NavyDadsAdmin said. After getting the culture shock of their lives the recruits live for mail and photo's of family and friends. My daughter said those photo's got her through a lot so don't hold anything and fire up those cameras. If you don't have one you can buy a basic point-n-shoot for pretty darn cheap and use the printing kiosk at your local drug store and print while you wait.

All I'll add to the mail discussion is: send your mail. Your recruits will get it...eventually. It may take a couple of weeks for various reasons, but they will get it. Mail in bootcamp is a privilege and a reward for the division coming together as a team.

Well said Larry!

RTC responded by telling me that the addresses listed on their site are the correct addresses. They said the recruiter should give you the ship # and div # and you follow the address provided on the RTC website. Like Larry said, temporary addresses are probably very common at Great Lakes. My only advice would be to send to the address that RTC gives and change it accordingly by what your recruit tells you. If you send it to the address their official Navy website for RTC gives, then I would imagine it will find your recruit.
