No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Hello All...FYI, as mentioned earlier, they no longer send parking passes out. They have to be downloaded using the password supplied in the form letter. Because they have just started doing this....they havent gotten all the kinks out yet (ie..web link is NOT active). Along with this new turn of events, they no longer send out "Grad Packs". The form letter that you receive has the list your sailor fills out for security along with a pamphlet with hotel and attraction info/coupons. The downfall to them combining the Form Letter and Grad Pack is since it is sent out after their first week there and they havent been to Classification yet, there is no longer any mention of Grad-n-Go.

Sandy...Congrats on PIR...give Molly our best!!

I added one photo from my wifes camera as the ones she took at graduation are pretty bad, my camera won't upload with the wire I brought and the sony card needs an adapter which of course I did not bring either so I will upload some of those Monday night when I get home.

Well we made it through graduation and our first day with our sailor. Not as emotional as I thought but that was because I had basically seen the entire graduation on videos from other folks. I would suggest not looking at videos of the graduation if you plan on attending and just be surprised by everything. Of course the second we actually got to leave the bleaches and hug or sailor, when the tears began to flow.
My story on the transportation is as follows, we drove because I could park in the handicap area right next to the drill hall. We left the Navy Lodge around 6:30 am and arrived at the gate 5 to 6 minutes later with a 10 minute wait, we then were directed to a large check area. We saw many people out listening to a speech by security with their hoods and trunks opened, and I'm not sure about personal search and a bomb and drug dog sniffing around. We showed our ids’ to the Petty Officer and waited for them to tell us to get out of our car, it never happened! We were there maybe a total of 15 minutes then drove to the parking area and were directed to the handicap area. We were in our seats no later than 7:15. If you are driving I would just make sure you are there by 6:45. We also took bleacher seat cushions with the backs on them as we had or 17 year old son and only 2 people are allowed in the handicap area and I just needed a seat with a back on it. We spent a few minutes with Molly then she went back to her ship to get her photos and shirts she had bought and off we went. Had her back by 19:00 and hour early as we were all tired and she would be sure to get checked in on time, now I need to pick her up at 0700 and off to Chicago for the day. I'll post some photos soon.

Hi Joe, I posted this on the hints and tips page as well but I would definitely recommend taking the shuttle. Cars were backed up for blocks to get on the base and then when on base I saw people lined up with their trunks/doors open for inspection. The shuttle is easily 5 to 10 times faster and costs are really cheap if not free. Holly just PIR'd on the 17th and it cost us $6.00 per person round trip. My Ex drove on and she was in line almost 2 hours.

Corey finally graduated 7/17 and is off to nuke school.now we are waiting for his brother Jeff (who also signed up on the 17th.) also in the nuke program. DEP is for feb 2010. we are so proud of all our new sailors.

Joe, I don't believe you need a parking pass. All people attending the P.I.R. will park in a designated area. May I suggest you use a shuttle for the graduation. It is much easier, less time consuming and cheap. Most hotels have shuttles to and from the event. Gary T.

Been a while here too. I'm thinking Paul is right, about half way through boot camp. Four weeks sounds right. Joe, I do not believe you can download this info anywhere. The Navy sends the package to the parents with parking passe's, hotel info, etc

as I remember--- and help me here people as you may have more recent experience-- about half-way in or about four weeks from PIR

A parking pass is in the grad package you receive. I advise taking a shuttle as getting onto base can be a royal pain. Review the suggestions in the PIR -Tips and Hints group
