No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

When my son graduated last summer we brought his cell phone to him, which he used while on liberty, but we brought it home with us and then sent it to him at his "A" school, which was in Pensacola. They will not let them have a cell while stationed at RTC. If your son is staying at Great Lakes for training, you may be able to leave it with someone or make other arrangements, but that would depend on when they transfer him over.

My take on it is...they can do without their cells for a few more days/weeks. Just because boot camp is completed does not mean they have nothing left to focus on. In a very big way, their "A" school will require just as much focus and attention, and failing at this stage will severely impede their careers. So...not having a cell phone may mean you cannot contact them as often, but it also means they are not calling all of their friends back home and easing back into some civilian habits before they are ready to do so. Their "A" school is every bit as important, if not more so, than boot camp.

David, I would say not until the 12th. When Holly was first slated for full weekend Liberty and she said no cell phones at the RTC. She said we'd have to give it to her at the airport.

Received call from My Son KD (DIV 836) about 2 hours ago. Battle Stations is behind them. He was on antibiotics for a few days so I was worried. Everything is on track for PIR 24JUL.

You can not send anything prior to PIR and Liberty. If he is a grad -n-Go, you could probably get his contacts to him before he leaves, otherwise let him check with his LPO.

Holly's mom gave Holly her cell phone but she was grad&go and she gave it to the bus driver before she shipped out. Holly said they weren't allowed any personal items other than letters and photos in the RTC.

Hello All...hope everyone is having a good day. It apears that PIR especially Liberty Call could be as dangerous as it is exciting! I'll make sure I keep a strong hold on my wife! Does anyone have any experience with sending their sailors items before PIR. I was wondering if we can send our son his contacts before hand?? If not, can he take them back to his ship from Liberty after PIR?
Any help would be appreciated.

Kirk, looks like you'll need to come over to the Pensacola A school group. My son's been there since June 5, the day he PIR'd, and he hasn't classed up yet. But I know he is enjoying his time there. When we were talking the other day he said, "Dad, this is like being on a paid vacation" He started with three room mates back from the fleet but now he is by himself. Told him that would change soon I'm sure. I'm going down to see him in three weeks.
