No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Agree Kirk with the Milwaukee thing....I did one PIR out of Midway (nightmare!!!) and the other out of O'Hare (still a crazy thing!!).

Jim is totally correct... KLEENEX!!!! HooYah!!

BTW, we flew into Milwaukee and it seems like that was a good idea. The airport is very easy to get around compared to larger airports. From touchdown to our hotel in Waukegan was just under an hour and that included picking up our rental car. I can't imagine getting here from O'Hare would be that stress free. Flying in early in the day also helps I'm sure.

Tick, tock Sandy, it's getting closer. We're actually there now. Drove by the base earlier. Looks totally different than I expected. We're going to make sure we catch the first shuttle and get there as early as possible so we can get close and get to Holly ASAP.

Molly wrote me a letter on July 12th I received today, she has been under the weather and the gas chamber was coming up for her whuch this past Monday. Her battle stations will be Monday because she said the next call will be Tuesday the I'm a sailor call! She has not been happy with her division 936 since they changed all the Recruits in charge on the girls side, she sadi everything went down hill, ready to get away from the estrogen drama as she calls it and on to A school. Looking forward to seeing her and she wants to see the new Harry Potter movie while on liberty.

Lance....As weird as you felt dropping him off, imagine how great you'll feel when you attend his graduation ceremonies. My son completed boot on June 26 and I still have not come down from the high.

Lance - welcome to the site. We've all been where you are. That first day or two are the hardest. Hang in there and stay in touch. It will get easier.

Hi all, Just to give everyone an idea of how much things can change when your son/daughter is Grad&Go. Holly just called and her post PIR time has changed again. First she was to have two hours of Liberty and then we'd have a little time at the airport. Then it changed to one hour of LIberty plus some time at the airport. Now she has an immediate flight out. She has no Liberty, no time at the airport and we'll have five minutes of visitation after PIR. As we've seen on this site many times, the "Needs of the Navy" supersede all else. So again, I would say the mantra for traveling to PIR is "Plan for the best, prepare for the worst". It'll take more than 5 minutes just to get to her after they call Liberty.

Hi everybody, I'm Lance and my son is Frank. I just dropped him off at the recruiters office to get taken to MEPS. He reports to Great Lakes tomorrow, and I wish him and all his fellow recruits the best.
It sure is a weird feeling dropping him off. I miss him already.

Jeff and Drew's Dad....Congrats to both of you. My son started classes at Goose Creek yesterday. They are 50 minutes on and 10 minutes off for 10 hours a day. Also, there is an additional 2 hours a night study time if there is a class the next day AND additional study time required for a total of 15 hours minimum of study time. Don't intend to scare anyone, just wanted to let the dads know what lies ahead so they understand if the phone calls and letters don't come as often as expected. But again, if the navy didn't think they could do it, they wouldn't be there. Again my best to both of you and to all who are serving this country, no matter what branch of service or job function.
