No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Yesterday I was down because I didn't get a letter in the mail. Today we got an unexpected phone call which was a hundred times better. Of course the phone call did not come without drama. Tim called and said that he had about 5 minutes to talk. We were on the phone for about 2 or 3 minutes when someone was yelling at him to hang up. He called back about 10 minutes later and talked for about 5 or 6 minutes. Tim said that's just what they do. It was great to hear his voice. He sounds very anxious for boot camp to be over. We were excited to hear that he passed all of the physical stuff on the first go around. Tim left for boot camp sick. He had a fever with a throat thing. He couldn't finish the 5th day of his medicine. He was coughing like crazy. Not the best way to start boot camp. I was worried that he would have trouble with all of the running and other physical stuff. Some of the stuff that he said made us laugh so it was really a good day. Did you know that they are learning how to iron and make a bed??? ha! His grandfather was a commander in the navy. We tried to tell Tim how it would be. Sometimes they just have to learn all by themselves.

I finally spoke with Holly about 10 min ago. She's feeling better now and is looking forward to finishing up. They had her LLD for a long time so she actually has to do not only her run, but two days of Firefighting and Battle Stations. I'm still a little worried because she was still coughing and hacking and she said that last Tuesday was her first day back on full duty and that the PT was brutal. She said she really misses her first division. She said her first DIV was a solid team and the women in this one still do a lot of backbiting and sniping at each other. Kind of confirms what Sandy's daughter is going through in her division. To listen to Holly's attitude you'd never think she'd had any problems though. She was upbeat and positive and gung ho to get this done. Unfortunately (For me) she's now Grad&Go and will only have limited Liberty and we'll only have a few hours with her. She does get to keep her "A" school at Pcola though. Anyway, I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers and I would ask you to please it keep it up 'til she gets through basic. At least I'll sleep a little better tonight. Thanks again.

Thanks for the feedback. This morning when I was at the gym The Price is Right was on the TV in the cardio room. It was a special military episode. it seems everywhere I turn I see sailors or something that reminds me of Tim. I guess I'm just having a bad day. Tomorrow will be better.

Hi Debbie, sometimes it's hard to say. We've only received two letters from Holly so far and she PIR's on the 17th. It just depends on how their training is going. Sometimes they lose their letter time for additional training if there is an issue. Also, different weeks have different workloads and the Navy does things their own way, in their own time. The best I can say is to expect anything and "No news is good news". If there are problems you will be notified.

Debbie I believe you will receive a letter in about week three or four, if I remember right. So it sounds normal. The first few weeks of boot camp their goal is to ween the Sailors off of Mommy and Daddy. Just keep writing daily to Tim so when his division earns the right for mail, he can catch up on what's going on. Hang in there! The first 4 weeks seem like forever but the last 4 fly by.

My son, Tim flew out on June 17th. We got the box with the stuff without the kid and the form letter about graduation. I've been dong pretty good until today. I was so disappointed when I checked the mail and there wasn't a letter again today. Am I expecting one too soon??? I thought he would have been able to write this past Sunday. We live in New Jersey. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

According to Molly this is what she said, she may have left some out as these are just letters that they write when they have the time, Monday is personal and weapons turnover inspection and their 2nd physical fitness assessment, Wednesday is their one and only drill inspection and a zone inspection plus on Wednesday they have live fire. Then the following Monday they have written test 2. She said these inspections are the "real deal" and can set you back in training if "we" fail. I noticed she used the word we, team work is what it's all about. So who knows what goes on in the days she did not mention. I think next week is the week of the gas mask, fighting fires ect. Not sure whythey call this hell week but I guess it is from the stress of all the inspections and test. I had heard week 5 was a tough week. I looked it upon the Navy site and theie weekly progress is all screwed up it gives a week for graduation and a week for Battle Stations and those all happen on the same week

Hey Chris, I can understand her feelings, w/ Holly in the Infirmary/Hospital every day I wait for what will hopefully be a good news phone call. The day after she was hospitalized I called the Medical Liason's office and they said they'd have her call me. That was days ago and I have yet to receive a phone call. I'm just going on the idea of "No news is good news". I just wish I knew if she was still in the hospital. We did receive her new div# and ship name so I hope she's back to training.

Sandy - What is "hell week"? Since Karen is just a week behind Molly, I'm wondering if she has a tough week coming up. She'll be starting Week 5. Is that gas mask week, or does that come a bit later?
