No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Brad...According to my sailor, ratings are changed constantly in boot camp as your recruit is there to "fill the current needs" of the navy. As far as extending his commitment from 4 to 6 years, I would double check with his recruiter. I know my son had to commit to 6 years since his first 1 1/2 will be spend in school. He is rated MM3.

Hello everyone. Found out our son Matt is in ship 10 Division 288. Looks like PIR will be 21 August. Anyone else have a son or daughter in his division?

Hello All, My son Bradley is in Div. 260 at GL. PIR date is 7/31. His mom and I are very excited for him. We got a letter today from him and he says that he might not be able to get the rating he signed up for. Is this a normal thing? He said he is being rated as Hull Technician instead of what he originally signed up for. I went online to find info on HT's and I found out that HT is a 6 yr commitment. He signed on for 4 yrs. I hope he is not getting scammed.

Debbie and Mark and everyone else. This is how liberty went for us. Friday morning ceremony started at 0900, however, I suggest you be there by 0630 to avoid the long lines at getting through security. it took us about 30-40 minutes to actually get into the hall where the ceremony was taking place. Don't be surprised if they have you get out of your car and open your trunk and hood. This was done randomly and can slow you down even more. We did not have to do this. The ceremony ends at approx. 11:00 and liberty starts immediately. However if your sailor is in a 900 division, they will be a little later as they have to return equipment and change their shoes. If you know what flag they are carrying, it makes them easier to spot. Mark, chances are she will be carrying a state flag. If so, look for her in the balcony on the sides of the hall about 60-90 minutes before the ceremony. We found our sailor sitting there watching everyone coming in. Also, I sat in the balcony and it was a much better view of the entire ceremony. Back to liberty, we left the base at approx. 1200 and had to return at 2000. Make sure you give them enough time to walk back to their ships. One sailor in my sailor's division was late Friday night and had his Saturday liberty cut from 0730 - 2000 to 1400 - 1700. My sailor's division got out late Saturday (0815) because 1 sailor forgot to shave. Sunday's liberty was from 0715 to 1900. Remember, times are not set in stone. They can change at a moment's notice. Also, don't be surprised if your sailor is very tired. Each night during leave, the fire alarm went off and they had to evacute their ships 1 to 3 times. Also, my sailor pulled watch between 0200-0400 Sunday morning. If you are looking for some souveniers, don't go to the Nex at their base. Go to the one on Green Bay Road about 2 blocks down. It is much larger and has a better selection. Good luck to all. Any more help I can give you, please let me know.

Mark Evett,
Here is the dope on the guidon (flag).

In military organizations, the practice of carrying colours, standards or Guidons, to act both as a rallying point for troops, and to mark the location of the commander, is thought to have originated in Ancient Egypt some 5,000 years ago. It was formalised in the armies of medieval Europe, with standards being emblazoned with the commander's coat of arms.

You should be proud, since the person picked for this is out front, seen by everybody, so the DI isn’t going to put someone up there that isn’t pretty squared away.

There are cases (son Eric was one) where they are grad-n-go to the Great Lakes base across the street. If that is the case, they often can spend the weekend with you and not need to muster until (I think....) 18:00 Sunday.

Mark, I looked up your daughters graduation and Molly is 1 week ahead of her. Anyone else have someone graduating 24 July?

Our son is in division 279 and scheduled to graduate on August 14th. Does anyone else have a son or daughter in this division?

We got a couple of letters last week and a 20 minute phone call today from Karen, which was great. She's in Week 4 now, and seems to be adapting well to BC life. (How does the time seem to pass quickly and slowly at the same time?) She said she's carrying a flag during their marching, and will get to carry it during PIR also. Other than making it a lot easier to pick her out of the "sea" of sailors during PIR, can anybody tell me the significance of carrying a flag? Is it a privilege they earn, or was she just in the right place at the right time, or what?
Also, does anyone else out there have a son or daughter in Division 267?

They are not allowed to stay out at night, that info will be in your graduation packet that will be sent to you. They also need to be in between 20:00 & 22:00 depending on their division and watch schedule. They also may need to stand watch during part of the "off" time. I would think the Saturday or Sunday afternoon game would be better, except for the heat. We are staying At the Navy Lodge and are staying Sunday night just in case Molly can spend the entire day with us, then we would head back monday. Difference is we are driving so we don't need to set anything in stone.
Division 936 24 July, tick tick tick, the time does seem to go by slowly.
