No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

GP - I just booked our hotel for August. I booked Thursday through Sunday. I am wondering if we should plan on staying through Monday. How do I know how much time my son will have to be with us? The Monday flight was actually cheaper. I'm just watching the price of the flights and waiting to hear from my son before I book the flights. I did book a suite at the Marriot. Do you know if he will be able to stay at the hotel with us. I've heard mixed information on that. Also, if I were to get tickets to a baseball game is Friday night a good night for him to go? Thanks! Debbie

Just got back today from PIR. My son graduated on June 26 and shipped out this morning for SC. For those of you who are awaiting PIR, it is an experience unlike no other. I am still on cloud 9. As for hotels, I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Metawa/Lake Forest on N. Riverwoods Ave. It is only a 10 minute drive to the base. Take Rt. 60 East to Rt. 41 N. Turn right on Buckley Ave. It is about 6-7 lights after the turn. The AAA rate was about $95 a night after all taxes were added. Only set back was that breakfast was not included as in other places. Didn't matter as my sailor got out at 0715 hrs and breakfast started at 0700. Besides, there is an IHOP and a Denny's about 2 miles away from the hotel in the other direction. Any questions, just ask and I'll try to answer them in the evening.

Thanks, Mark and Joe. BTW, right now Courtyard by Marriott is offering a promotional package of a $20.00 Visa gift card for each night you stay. Our room is $110.00 per night and with the promo offset the price balances out to $90.00. Ramada Inn was charging $80.00 for similar accommodations. They also offer discounts if you are a member of AAA. Thanks again.

Jim,
It's an OPSEC Thing. They take it very seriously in the SO community. They want it so there is no way some other entity can discover the identity of a future SO and thereby putting them in danger, on current or future missions. They (navy) tell the SOs to remove pictures of them from the web, and dump full blown bios off of my space and face book. The idea is so no enemy or terrorist can figure out who they are or you are, they want to keep everybody safe and able to do their job. Just ask grandapa273 he’ll tell how deep in the weeds they get looking for compromises.

Kirk ~ First I am saying a prayer for Holly. Hopefully they will get her pumped full of antibiotics and back in the groove.

Second, Thanks for the info on the Ramada, and the Marriott. I will be calling the Marriott as soon as I find out when Z-man is going to PIR.

I've been reading some info on Moms4Navy. My wife has been advised that since our son is in DIV 840 as a SO that we should not use our last name or have any pictures of our son. Can anyone advise me further on this. Jim

Both great ideas. I'll do it.

Thanks Jim, it's been a crazy 24 hours here for sure. I work 12 hour shifts and I got the call as I was walking through the door. Makes for a long night at work. When she first signed up she was aware to get a specialty. Otherwise she's liable to get laundry duty or something similar. Holly signed up for 8 years and said it was her plan to be career navy so hopefully she'll stick to her guns and get a quality specialty. She wants to work the deck of an aircraft carrier real bad so I think she'll stick it out. On the bright side of this, we've changed all of our reservations for flights and car and we booked a room through the Mariott which was an amazing difference in the quality of customer service. I'm guessing that Sandy was right and I imagine they've got her in bed with an antibiotic drip in one arm and fluids in the other. If I understood the recruiter correctly, she's successfully completed everything except the run so if she can almost do it sick then once she's healthy it should be no problem. We're going to stay positive and pray for her health to return asap. Like you said though, sun and surf sounds pretty darn good after bronchitis. Thanks again.
