No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

My prayers go out to your daughter; basic/boot was tough enough without all that pressure. Have her stick to guns on her current job, if that is what she wants, amazing what the military can do when it wants too. If she has to be re-classed, which I hope she doesn't, make sure she picks what she wants. Too often they jump on something quick just to get out of RTC.

Thank you David and Sandy, Holly was scheduled for Aviation Boatswains Mate training at Pcola. I spoke with her recruiter earlier and once she recovers and passes her run she'll probably be placed on stand-by duty until the next A school training session begins. If they are full up on that classification she'll be allowed to re-classify with a different specialty. In a worse case scenario and her bronchitis worsens and she's separated she'll have to wait six months and then she can re-enlist.

Kirk, sorry to hear about Holly, hopefully they will pump her full of antibiotics and have her well in a week or less then she can just finish up with another division and PIR with them. I see so many folks talking about their sailors getting to P Cola and then waiting for weeks to start school either because they are waiting on their clearance or for the next school to start, what school was she scheduled for? Hang in there I'm sure with the medical attention she is receiving she will be just fine.

I haven't heard anything else about Holly but I wanted to let everyone know this about the Ramada Inn in Waukegan. Do Not Use Them for any reason whatsoever! I had no problems changing my flights and rental car but since I booked and paid for our room in advance the Ramada Inn won't let us change our dates or cancel. They stuck me for $450.00 and said "Too bad you got a discount for paying early and it's non-negotiable" I'll be filing complaints but since Navy graduations are their bread and butter for that location I would think that they would want to keep customers and not alienate people. Again, Ramada Inn does not support us or our children and we should not use them.

Kirk,
I wish I had some answers for you on that one....I just wanted to let you know that our hearts go out to you and we will say a prayer that Holly gets well soon!

I had just arrived at work last night when I got the bad news phone call. Holly's chest cold turned into full blown bronchitis. She toughed it out as long as she could but they finally had to pull her out of training and put her in the infirmary. I don't have all of the details since she spoke with her mom who then relayed it to me. I know that she has been set back and her PIR is now tentatively scheduled for the 17th. I don't know how long the Navy gives her to recover but her mom said she sounded extremely sick and was emotionally crushed. She feels like she let everyone down and really wanted to graduate with her division. Obviously our number 1 concern is her health but I also wonder how this will affect her "A" school. She was slated to ship out to Pcola on the 8th. I know that if you fail some portion of basic and get set back it's considered breaking your contract and you could lose your specialty. Does she still lose it if she got set back due to illness or once she PIR's will they find something else for her to do until the next class starts? I did buy the insurance on our flights and I hope to get the time off at work for the new date so I'm not concerned about the money but if she's isn't better by then will she get set back again or will they separate her and then make her re-do the entire boot camp after she recovers? This has thrown us all for a loop so if anyone has any experience or info on this type of situation I would appreciate your sharing.

My Son left Wednesday(24th) and we got the 1:59am call on Thursday. Admittedly we have been beside ourselves. Waiting to get his box, his form letter and anticipating his first phone call. I want to thank everyone for the information posted.....it has REALLY helped. My wife has been taking this extremely hard but I believe that if it wasn't for NavyMoms and the support they have given her, things would be sooo much worse. She found this site for me, to help me deal with my son being gone. I am glad she did, because it too has helped me adjust. My biggest problem is having the flood of emotions I must have supressed from when I was at RTC twenty years ago.
In response to the resent postings.....We just got word that my Dad is terminally ill. That has been yet another emotional rollercoaster I apparently have endless tickets to ride. However, I am glad to see that our idea of NOT telling our son (when we do get the chance to exchange letters/calls) about his Grandpa is the right decision. For that I once again thank all of you for your thoughts.

The post cards sound like a good idea but Holly told us they didn't want her using the self addressed envelopes we sent. They wanted her to use Navy envelopes. I don't know if that's a call that may change by division or not. I don't know how the phone card works. Holly never mentioned needing one but when she calls it shows up as "Pay Phone" on the caller ID. I told her she could always call collect if needed.

some ideas--- it is difficult for your sailor recruits to get the "stuff" to write home...they need to have the cash and then they need to get to the NEX and as a new arrivial, they don't have many chances or privileges. You may want to send some stamped, addressed envelopes to make their lives easier. I also know of people that sent a bunch of postage-paid, addressed post cards....easy to dash off a line or two and drop in the mail.

Understand that they may not get the letters you write for a couple of weeks....they earn the privilege to get mail so you may want to number your letters in sequence so they know what order to read them in. They only get the chance to write on Sundays so as Sandy said you can figure to get your letters on Wed or Thurs depending on where you live. And above all remember the old adage--- no news is good news! Your sailors have a ton of things to learn and do in the first few weeks....they haven't forgotten you, but may not have earned letter writing privs yet!

He can get that stuff but they haven't been paid yet so it will be easier if you send him phone cards, they would probably like to get Navy Stationary to write on, stamps would be a good idea, did he go up there with any money, is so he can purchase the stationary himself.
