No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Tim doesn't have any phone cards, paper, stamps, etc. Should I send him some??

He should be able to write this Sunday, we receive our letters on Wednesday, they take 2 days to get to St. Louis from Great Lakes if you are farther away it could take 3 days for you to receive your letter so hang out at the box on Wednesday or Thursday. Molly was so nervouse the first day that when they told her to send stuff home she sent everything, including her phone cards and stationary, I would have loved to been a fly on the wall when they first arrived, I really don't remember the first day of boot camp, i think it's probably a recessed memory that i don't want to bring up!! LOL

My son left for boot camp on June 17th. Got a call that lasted less than 10 seconds at 2:40 AM on the 18th. He sounded very tired and a little tense. Does anyone know if he will be able to write today (Sunday) or will it be next Sunday??

Keep sending those letters because they love to receive them. We are still receiving 1 letter a week from Molly just finishing her 4th week. We have received 1 phone call last Friday so I expected one yesterday but did not receive it. Maybe we will hear from her on Sunday, or maybe they got in trouble and aren't allowed phone privileges. Every letter or phone call we have received she tells us how much she likes boot camp. She is the AROC of her division and tells me she gets along with everyone but a lot of the girls are fighting with each other. This is a very stressful time for our kids so make sure you just keep sending them positive letters. My folks are 85 and Molly asked we not inform her of any problems they might be having as she did not want the extra stress or to have to start boot camp over. Each person needs to make their own decision on that kind of info but we discussed it before she left. It all goes back to when my Grandpa dies when my Mom was visiting my brother is the service in Germany and we agonized over whether to tell her or not and maybe ruin her vacation. Family history made us have this discussion, if you are on this website before your son or daughter leaves I suggest you have the discussion with them and let them make the decision. I just remembered she told me they have 4 hours of choir practice on saturday so hopefully we will hear from her on Sunday.

Kirk, it all depends. My son's division and their brother division were the first to go in their group, and they finished one week before PIR. I understand some don't finish until the Thursday before PIR. I've heard some parents don't get the call until they are already in Great Lakes. I think they do go in numerical order, if that is any help, like in my son's group it was divisions 210 through 215 and then the 900 division graduating, and 210 and 211 went first and I think 900 was somewhere in the middle of them. Yes, I'm pretty sure they always let them call home, although it takes a while for everyone to get to use the phone. My son got finished at 8 a.m. and I didn't get the call until about 5 p.m. I hope this helps.

Anybody know how close to PIR they run "Battle Stations"? We're 5 days out from PIR and I haven't received the "I am a Sailor" call yet. Do they always let them call home?

Our son left on Thursday (25 Jun), got a txt message when he landed and then finally got a phone from a very tired boy around 1030 pm MST. Found out his DIV (841) and ship (04) last night from his recruiter, so now the waiting begins for the first letter from him. Already written one for him and hope to mail it out today.

Our son Jesse just got done with P week. Today we got the form letter with graduation date, etc.... On his 3 lines to write a personal note he made a joke and said so far it was not too bad, just have to pay attention and HUSTLE! It was nice to get even that small bit of communication.

My son Chris left San Jose, Calif. today for boot camp.
I'm sitting here waiting for his call. In the mean time reading lots of info from 'our' site and getting a much needed education.
