No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Hi Ken, my daughter went up day after Memorial Day, spent Memorial day eveing in the hotel. She did say others in her unit arrived later in the week so maybe Brandon will get lucky and have a short processing week. Check with his recruiter on Monday the 6th and see if they have a ship address for him yet, they can look it up on the computer and nlet you know days before you get the form letter from your son.

Hi Ken, my daughter, Holly, PIR's on the 2nd. She is tentatively scheduled for weekend Liberty over the holiday, but, she said she doesn't get her orders 'til the 8th. It's only a guess, but a long processing week seems quite likely

My son, Brandon heads for boot, week from tomorrow. He's getting a little nervous and excited all in one. Know what he's going though. Been there done that..........So just wondering hows his check in going to be. Starts on the 2nd and July 4th two days later? Think he'll have a long processing week? Week one start on the 6th or the 13th of July?

I wasn't sure if they were allowed photos so I was printing them with my letters to Molly, she said the exact same thing as Holly, please send photos!!!, she didn't even care whether they were new or old, just something to keep them in touch with the outer world.

Just a follow up. We are now in the "No news is good news" mode. Holly was scheduled to do her run today and since we've not heard from her we're hoping all went well with her run. Also, I've been sending her 2-4 pictures with each letter which has meant a lot to her. She said that pic's from home are a huge deal for all of the recruits so for the people out there who's kids recently went in I would encourage and remind you to send all of the photo's you can. Small size of course, wallet size or 4 x 6 at the largest. The first line in her latest letter was "Please keep the pic's coming, we love them". Keep your fingers crossed, thanks!

Chicago is about 34 miles (straight line) according to Google Earth from the base.....I'm sure you can visit the zoo with no issues as the 50 mile radius is quite aways past the city.

The line of this image is a 50.00 mile radius line from the base:

I was graced with a phone call from Holly today. What a wonderful feeling that was. And just as Sandy was saying, the difference in the way she sounds was amazing. Unfortunately she's been pretty sick with a bad chest cold and still hasn't passed her run. She has her time down pretty close and has one more opportunity on Tuesday and she's confidant she'll pass. I hope so, she was coughing and hacking like mad on the phone. Her division has been doing well in their other tests and she's quite happy with that. It's amazing how quickly they learn to be a team. As for now she is not Grad&Go and division is supposed to have full weekend Liberty,"Subject to change". Holly loves the zoo and told me she wants to go there over Liberty. Does anyone know if Chicago's zoo is within the 50 mile radius they are required to stay within? I know it's a world class zoo so that would be a great photo op with her. Anyway, it was great to talk to her and we're really looking forward to PIR.

I received my first phone call yesterday from my daughter, Molly. It was a shock, she is 20 years old lived out of the house for 2 years while going to college and working but in the few short weeks the Navy has had her I can hear the difference already. I remember my Mom always complained when I would write or speak in military nomenclature or jargon. Well now it's my turn, Navy jargon is different than the Army for sure. She was made PO of her PT group but that was taken away from her and she was promoted to something else by I did not quite catch the terminology but basically she is Recruit CPO or something of her division, I asked what her job was and she said she calls cadence when they march and has to keep people in line when they mess up, that sounds like a double edged sword, stand out for promotion but get your shipmates pissed at you. So far she said it is working out fine. My wife and I received separate phone calls because I am in Vegas at the World Series of poker, we spoke afterwards and both said it was amazing how different she sounded, so even keel no emotional outbursts, no cutting down her shipmates. Acing all the written test and passing on first try all the physical test but then said Dad I did get one gig on my inspection for having a rat hole in my blanket, whatever that is!!! Dad's chest is sticking way out, whish I could watch as she progresses through this change of life. Div 936 graduation July 24th. She thinks she is leaving the Tuesday after graduation but from what I hear they really don't know until a week or so ahead, she first heard of grad n go when I wrote her about it. Counting the days until we see her again.

For those that are grad-n-go, please check the PIR-Tips and Hints group. There are some posts in there about getting a security pass at the airports so you can spend a extra hour or two with your sailor at the gate while he/she waits for his/her flight. Every minute extar is worthwhile and memorable.

I'd echo what NavyDads Admin said. Even if I had had only 5 seconds to spent with him, I'd do it all again. It was truly the most amazing experience I ever had since he was born.
