No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Thanks for the help. Maybe you can help me with this one: we got my daughter's form letter today, and the letter confirmed the Ship 13, Division 267 information we received from the recruiter. However the PIR date on the form is 8/7, not 7/31, so now I'm confused. Any thoughts on the difference?

Otto and Mark, that is the way our sons packet was.It said Grad&Go and the is exactly what happened.A bummer for sure, but at least we were able to see him board at O'Hare which was better than nothing at all.

It's not a sin to get knocked down; It's a sin to stay down

Mark, TG stands for Training Group. According to the PIR schedule, your recruit is in Training Group 37. We didn't know for sure that our son was a Grad-n-Go until the morning following PIR. We suspected it because the grad packet you will be receiving in the mail will state if your Division is Grad-n-Go and the one John sent did state that. So, we were prepared for that to happen. There is always hope at the last minute things may change. It was disappointing when following the ceremony his first words were "I've got some bad news, I have to leave the base in 2 hours." Sometimes, recruits are allowed to make a 'last minute' phone call to tell you they are G-n-G. Just be prepared to go with the flow. The Navy has it's way of doing things that don't always make sense to us. Make the best of your time with your new sailor whatever the case may be. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, Paige. I mis-typed in my first message. Her Division is 267, not 167. If I'm reading the PIR Dates page right, her PIR is July 31, which is a week earlier than the recruiter guessed before she left for GL.

Mark,
I just spoke with my sailor on the phone. He is unfamiliar with the TG #'s, but we do know for certain that the PIR dates are listed according to their division #'s. The ship #'s are just simply numbers to identify the barracks. There are at least 2 divisions in each ship. The sailors usually do not find out if they are grad-n-go until toward the end of bootcamp. The job/rate they signed up for will also be a determining factor as to whether they are grad-n-go. Most of the time, the sailors will have liberty for the entire weekend, but there are a few who are not so fortunate and have to leave sooner. Unfortunately, you will need to wait for word from Karen before you know anything for certain regarding that issue. My best wishes to Karen while she is in bootcamp.

Kirk,
According to my sailor, there will be at least a few different opportunities to try and pass the run. He remembers running 3 or 4 times. He passed the first time, but each recruit has to run it every time whether they've passed it or not. He said the most important thing is that she pass the final run. The Navy wants Holly to be successful just as much as she wants it, so they will work with her to help make it happen. With the encouragement of her fellow shipmates and those who are training her, I'm sure Holly will do fine. I'll be pulling for her and hope that everything works out well.

Hi everyone. My daughter Karen arrived at GL last Tuesday evening, and we got her box of belongings delivered yesterday. Thanks to the info on this web site, I called her recruiter and got her address, so we were able to put some letters in the mail yesterday afternoon.

I have a couple of questions you might be able to help me with. First, Karen is in Ship 13, Division 167. Is the Ship # the same as the "TG" number on the PIR Dates web page? Should I be watching for the Division #, the Ship (TG?) #, or for when it lists both? I'm not sure how to interpret the info posted there.

Second, how soon did your son or daughter find out whether they were grad-n-go or if you would get to spend a day or two with them? I know I won't find out for a while yet, but I'm curious as to whether it's during the last week of Boot Camp or a little sooner.

Thanks in advance for you help. Mark

Does anyone know how many opportunities the recruits have to pass the PFA (specifically the 1.5 mi. run)? We got a letter from Holly and apparently the run is giving her some problems. They had their second PFA this past week and she was concerned about passing the run. She said she'd write us on Sunday and let us know how it went for her.

We got the call about 4:PM. My son is a Sailor in the United States Navy. He said the ceremony after BS was very emotional for all there. "...after a night of defending our ship and all the officers yelling at us and telling us what to do... then they stand in front of you, look you in the eye, shake your hand, and thank you for your service..." I can't wait to see him!
