No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

I second John's comments. My son was in the same division and John and I found out quickly what we were hoping would not happen...a Grad - n - Go.. and after that moment things happened at a dizzying pace. Less than two hours with your sailor at Great Lakes (at NEX) then a mad dash to the airport, get security clearance, and spend as much quality time as you can before the first boarding announcement. The Pass In Review is a thrilling event. When you see your sailor's division come smartly marching thru the overhead doorway, it will almost take your breath away. The advice about sunglasses for the bright lights is well taken at this point. A very proud moment. Great Lakes is a fantastic facility and your recruit is in good hands. You will recognize your sailor at the PIR, but be prepared for surprises after those first hugs. Your child has become a sailor and you WILL see the differences and swell with pride all over again. God bless all.

HooYah John! Let me assue you the ups and downs do not end with Great Lakes...use NavyDads.com to help answer your questions and concerns. With two sailors in the fleet I have as many questions today as I did at PIR so continue to call on this Navy brotherhood as I do to deal with those issues and concerns that will arise as you continue your journey with you sailor!

For those of you heading to PIR, I'd recommend avoiding the Flanigans near the base. The place is a dive - dirty and we found (let's just say) issues with our food. There are a lot of much nicer places - the N4Moms groups tend to congregate there but I was glad to get out of there.

Stephen - we never got that call. We left him at MEPS at 11am and never heard a word till the 3-lines on the form letter after about 10 days. He told us later they were sent to the bank of phones and ran out of time while waiting in line and were told that was it. My wife was ready to skin the nearest Navy person alive - but we called the recruiter the next am and they confirmed he had arrived safely and we learned his division number earlier than most parents. That was a very long day - hang in there as every week it gets a little easier. He called home for the first time 31 days after leaving home - that was tough but it does get easier.

Hi Stephen! From what I have seen most do get a call but some don't - not sure the reasons behind that. I am a firm believer in what I have learned the last 8 weeks . . . no news is good news!

My daughter shipped yesterday June 3rd. She called us from the airport when she arrived in Chicago at about 1930 Chicago time. She had not checked into USO at that point. We never got the 10 Second I am here call when she arrived at great lakes. I am sure that if she had not gotten there the Navy would have called. But her mother is concerned. Do they sometimes not get the opportunity to call home?

We got a link to a group of pictures from the Memorial day parade in Winnetka. There are 118 pix. We found Eric in one so far. It is posted on my page. Here's the link;

I hope you can find your sailor. This really made my wife's day!

I talked to some Chicagoans I know last night and they are recommending flying into the Milwaukee airport, taking a rental car to the hotel and then taking a shuttle to the PIR. Apparently the difference in distance between O'Hare and Milwaukee is pretty insignificant and you don't have to deal with the insanity. Thanks for the info, I'll definitely ck out the Hints/Tips page.

Kirk--- seriously consider taking one of the shuttles that run from the various hotels to the base....takes a whole lot of confusion out of the equation...check out the PIR- Hints and Tips group for more suggestions
