No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Hi Jeff! I don't think Div 929 is a triple threat division, so I don't think they would be singing or doing anything instrumentally. Are they a flag division?

I hate to sound vague here, but since I don't have any official source to name, I'll have to admit this is rumor.
That being said, I know that no one would want to miss an opportunity to see their sailor. So here goes...
Rumor from Navy Moms has it that Div. 929 will be performing at the Chicago White Sox game tonight. They are hosting the Athletics at 8:15 ET.
So, if anyone can confirm this, please post and enlighten us all.

I got a letter Monday. Eric told us about the parade in Winnetka.
Complete strangers were thanking them and saying God Bless You. Veterans in uniform were standing tall and saluting, some with tears in thier eyes. Eric said, "The parade was phenomenal..."; "I never realized how much we meant to the people until that day."; "It hit me hard!"; "I have a whole new reverance for what I am doing here."
As a parent, I hope that your sailor had the same experience. Men don't talk much about thier feelings, so I know Eric had a genuine eye-opening experience. It's too bad that all recruits can't march in a Memorial Day parade. I am glad he did. I only wish I could have been ther too!
May God bless you and your sailor too. With Gratitude, Jeff

yes, they all work but you should check out the site links on the right side of this page and use the format used in "contact your sailor" That is the one the folks at GL prefer.

Hi Gary, I guess that's why they call it snail mail. My question has been if one address works better than the other. We have two- One on the form letter with her ship name and building number (But no street address) and the other has a ship number instead of name, and was on her first letter and matched what the recruiter gave me. The Navy says they both work but I wonder if one works better than the other?

To anyone waiting to hear from there son. My son Luke Div 932 went in on April 27. we did not get a phone call from him other than the initial 30 second one until Wedneday May 27. Also, his first letter which was written on May 10 was postmarked May 26. we did get other letters he wrote later beforehand. Just don't get discouraged. They will come.

Hi Barbara, You pretty much hit it right on the head. I'm guessing that someone will take the shifts and then I'll end up getting paid back in spades with the worst hours and shifts somewhere down the road.

Tony, I do hope it works out for you. PIR is definitely a family event.
In any case you may want to be sure Holly orders the DVD with her pictures from the NEX photo service. A great video record of that day. Every minute of the ceremony from the starting drum rolls to the mass of families rushing to embrace their sailor.

We were their in April and our son is still at GL on the school side. Even if
your sailor is a 'grad and go'. The memories of that day will be treasured for years to come.

hi kirk , I understand your situation. I had the same problem, I got its abad time etc. However I proactive explained the reason to my fellow employees. people started to volunteer to pick up my weekend. I had a list of names went to my boss and said this is what I have done so it will work, I waited for the usual negative response but I chose to do it in front of my peers.Nothing was said i now have the time off. I was very grateful but i do expect to have eat crow for a while and pick up hours that no wants. I will deal because I could not miss it not for anything. I have to admit I did not have another game plan if it did not work. I would hope your employer would realize the situation its not a do over thing. If he or she doesnt understand union or not I feel sorry for him. Barbara
