No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Grad-n-go is determined by rating and A school demands, not by RTC divisions, or at least that's the way it used to be.

Does anybody know if it is typical for the honor divisions to be Grad & Go or not?

Oh and if you have a specific question that I didn't answer, feel free to ask. I'll do my best to answer.

Good morning All!!! I've just returned from my son's PIR and I thought I'd post a few pointers for those of you who are going soon.

1) Get to the base early. We got there at 6:45 and there were lines already, it will take about 30 minutes to get through security and you want the best seats!! I would recommend taking a shuttle, if your hotel offers one, traffic out of the base after PIR is bad, very bad.
2) When you enter the ceremony hall, there are signs for your division -- sit to the left of the sign and by left I mean the next divison over and then sit a little to the left of that sign. My son was DIV 167 and he was standing just to the left of the 168 sign so I did not have a very good position for taking pictures. The lowest divisions are at the far end of the hall and then go up, I believe the 900 divisions are in the middle and 800 divisons are 1st div as you walk in.
3) The digital cameras, at least mine, did not take very good pictures because of the lighting, bring a back up. I just used one of those disposable jobs, hoping they turn out fine.
4) If you want to go to the NEX, go quickly -- it gets PACKED with parents buying Navy stuff. My son was a grad & go so we opted to pass, I'll buy stuff online...
5) If your child is a grad & go, they will most likely have to report back to their compartment by noonish, giving you only an hour onbase. Make sure to ask them which airport they are flying out of and plan to meet them there. Meet them at the check in counter and be sure to tell the ticket agent that you'd like to go to the gate with them. My daughter and I had no problem getting a no board pass, just need id and Sailor's last name.
6) Finally, make sure your Sailor checks in with the USO office and the other Sailors traveling too - they don't tell them to, but we didn't and a lot of time was wasted trying to round them all up. There is free food and drinks as well as PCs with internet connections and phones. The families are welcome to join them and the folks there give them very very good information and put them at ease.

That's it, safe travels to all going to PIR soon and enjoy those Sailors!!

Hi John...Sounds like Aidan is going thru the same thing our son James went thru.Tired,homesick.and the teeth, but as everyone else here that has been thru the experience will tell you,it will get better.Takes some time, but as training progresses his mood will change,in both the phone calls and the letters to a noticeable degree.
Tell Aidan good luck and that we are all pulling for him and thank him for his service to our great country.A good day to you and your family!

Received my first real letter today! YAY The return address is different from the one on the form letter I received last week. Need to get the correct address out to family and friends. I can't believe how positive and mature he sounds! It makes me so happy and proud. I only wish I could talk to him.
