No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

OK boys . . . need some help . . . I just found out that my son Mike who went in 15 April 2009 is in Division 930 and is in the USS Constitution. I understand that 930 is an honor division. What does that mean? How does one get selected for an honor division? And anything else you can tell me . . .??

Thanks!
John

Mike i think when you rent the car you will have to ask for one with G.P.S I could be wrong as my memory isn't what it used to be,but i believe i read that bit of info someplace.

Mike, I wish you and your son the best. P.I.R. is a great experience. Now to attempt to answer your question ref: O'Hare to hotel. Since I don't know your hotel I will attempt to explain the route. Two words (HEAVY CONSTRUCTION). Think about it for awhile. Get the thought out of your system. Its not really that bad. It depends on your arrival time. Early morning and late afternoon are your heaviest. Evening traffic is lighter, very light on Sunday. Construction extents all the way north bound too and beyond the Great Lakes area. (You can do it) I would suggest knowing your route. (have Illinois map, Google satellite view). If you rent an auto (for mobility sake) you will leave the airport on route 190. You follow 190 to I-294. Construction is heavy at this enter change. Take I-294 NB (Milwaukee or Wisconsin). There are portions of the route that are finished but a majority is torn up. I would suggest driving in the center or right lane. Your driving skills with heavy construction traffic should be improving by now. The rest is a piece of cake. I-294 will join up with I-94. Great Lakes is on Rte 137 or Buckley Road. I believe tolls should cost $1.00 to $2.00. (you have to pay for the fun and pleasure of using the Illinois tollway). The training base is on Buckley Road about 4 miles from I-294/I-94. Read the P.I.R. threads, locate your hotel. Study your maps and satellite views and you should have no problems. I travel to and from there on weekends to pick up my son and bring him home. Gary T.

Hi Mike,we had my sister-in-law pick us up,but even she had not had any experience driving in Chicago. The one thing she did have was a G.P.S. Made getting around for places to eat a snap and to shop for snacks and the such.
I think renting a car and getting G.P.S would be the route to go,if for no other reason than getting to and from the motel. As far as from the motel to P.I.R. i would suggest the shuttle service. It made getting to and from P.I.R a breeze.
As for getting into and back from Chicago after graduation,we rode the train, and from there we rode metro buses and the El train.Took us where ever we wanted to go and the ppl. were very helpful.Just buy a pass for about 10 bucks and you should be set for the day.Just have to make sure you get to the metra train back to G.L early as it takes 1 hour for the train ride. Best of luck to Matt, you and your family.

Is anybody else out there in Div 926 PIR May 15?
Comment by Mike Gallo on April 20, 2009 at 9:08am
Thanks for such a great informative web site. My son Matt's PIR is May 15 and I was wondering what is the best way to get from OHare to motel. I'm not comfortable driving around Chicago. It was 40 yr ago that I was here but remember going on a 12 hr liberty and traveling by train into Chicago.
Any help will be appreciated.

Joe, phone calls can come any day at any time. Typically on weekends though. Just make sure you send your Sailor a phone card so that he can call your cell phone. I think the phone was attached to my wife the entire time of boot camp.

Hello and a big thank you for this great site and all of the great Navy people . Everyone has been great and very helpful. My Son SR Tyler is starting his seventh week at GL. Ten Days and a Wake up for Mom and Dad to go to GL. Thanks for all the great help along the way for us. Then it will be time for us to join some new Groups for more help. Tyler goes on to "A" School at Corry Station (Pensacola, Fla.) (CTT), so we will have the honor of joining "A" School Group and Cryptology Groups. HOOYAH for all of our new SAILORS and the parents that support them. Anyone else going to PIR on 1 May you will be able to recognize us because we will be the parents with the biggest smiles in the Hall. Thanks and this is not goodby just moving ahead GO NAVY !!
