No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

John, I strongly reccomend HONOR, COURAGE and COMMITMENT. We all read it while he was in DEP and again after he left. We now use it to keep up with where he is in his training. Although it is a little outdated now it is well worth the time and money.

Our son Jeff just completed his 4th week in boot camp. We received a letter from him with a form letter indicating graduation is 15 May 2009. My wife and me are excited for the trip to RTC and seeing him. Jeff is in Div 195, his ship is USS Enterprise - anyone else have a son or daughter in that group?

John, Ditto to what everyone else said. You will find this site very helpful. Within the first week of my daughter's enlistment at boot camp I think I read every thread on this site. If I had a question usually I got an answer very quickly.

You should get a copy of HONOR, COURAGE and COMMITMENT as Steve mentioned. It follows a division through bootcamp and shows the experience from the RDC and SR side.

john, be prepared for and emotional moment the day the box comes. It's a moment you will not forget probably for the rest of your life. For the next few weeks you'll probably get the feeling that this isn' t fair, but believe me they keep the recruits busy just about every waking moment, but after you get a few calls it won't be so bad. Then before you know you'll be getting ready to go to pir, and you'll really be amazed. Hang in there, keep visitng the site and it we'll be all over. I too recommend Honor, Courage, Commitment as a must read. You won't want to put it down

John J, YOU should be receiving THE BOX belonings your sailor took to GL. Then you will rec. a form letter telling you the RULES with 2 lines from Mike. This will or should be within days. After that it's all sit and wait. They will be busy and only be able to write or call on Sun. if the division is doing well. In a day or two check to the right of this posting and click PIR this will tell you when Mike is due to graduate from BC.

John, it's kind of the case of "hurry up and wait". You will be sent a form letter with your son's division number and address on it. I received my form letter exactly one week after my son left for bootcamp. It's my understanding that you can contact your son's recruiter to obtain this info. I decided not to do that and just waited for my letter to arrive. I had a couple of letters all ready to send to my son by the time I got his address.
This first week of bootcamp, the recruits are kept busy with medical, dental, and administrative processing. Most of the recruits complain about the processing days more than any thing else they do in boot.
His exciting journey has just begun! Good luck and best wishes to your soon to be sailor.
