No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

FOr those of you concerned about your family member, remember one thing as far as boot camp goes. No news is usually good news. If something bad occured legal or medical. you would get a call and your family member would most likely be transfered to ship 17. Hang in ther for a couple of weeks. They have to get these kids attention and get them lined out with minimal distractions but you will hear from them.

Welcome Larry!! I'm sure you'll find this group a great source for support and information. Those letters and phone calls do seem to change tones for the better as the weeks go by. Good luck to your son!!

Hello All....My son left 3/18/09. He is in Div 189 Ship 10. We have sweated out the last three weeks but today got our first call. Much improved over the first letter we received. I am proud to join this group and look forward to growing with it.

Glad the event was everything and more than what you thought it would be...it is very hard to put into words the feeling you get when you see your son or daughter march through that big rollup door...it is pretty amazing to be sure! Keep us posted on your sailor as he enters the fleet....Paul

Well, PIR was incredible, my wife and I were very impressed with the ceremony and it was MUCH different being in the audience vs. being on the floor as I was 25 years ago!

Seeing Aaron walk in in his Dress Blues was the highlight of our weekend, and although he was a "Grad & Go" he did not leave until early Saturday morning. We found that it is possible (depending on the airline) to get a "gate pass" so we were able to go past the security checkpoint and steal a few more minutes with our son.

Taking the shuttle from the hotel saved us a little time, but would have been more significant had there been larger crowds (it was not real busy when we got there around 7:15, although the seats were filling up by the time we got into Freedom Hall.

Pictures are a bit of a challenge, especially with a small digital camera, so be prepared to practice and get the right settings before the Divisions arrive. Halfway up in the lower bleachers proved to be a good vantage point for photos.

The Honor Recruits for each Division will be in the hall before the ceremony, near where each Division will line up. I say near, because it is nowhere near exact, so be prepared to be off a little even if you line up "exactly" in front of the sign for your Division.

Be prepared for the weather! It can be cold, windy, and even wet so dress accordingly. We had to go to WalMart to purchase an umbrella when we arrived (don't need one much here in sunny Arizona!) You will need a good one that can withstand the wind...I saw many inverted umbrellas this weekend.

We did exactly what our new Sailor wanted to do on Friday, and had him back in plenty of time for the 19:45 curfew (I recall being allowed to stay out until Midnight back in the day), arriving back on the base early is a good idea and will afford time to shop at the NEX for souvenirs without such big crowds.

I will post more as I think of it, we just got home and are still very excited and proud of our son's accomplishments!!!

Gary, we'll definately be taking a ton of pictures. i know will probably be a once in a lifetime experience for us. I'll be giving James a big thanks and a big hug here next week, but i think i am going to direct him to this site once he has his laptop. That way he'll know that it is more than his parents that care about him,all of you folks on here have been just fantastic in your support of all of the other parents and their sailors.
I would like to give a big thanks to all of you and your sailors.

Steve, may I wish you a safe trip to Great Lakes. P.I.R. should be right up there with the birth of your son JAMES. Enjoy the moment, take all of the pictures you can and above all give your son a big thanks for his service to this great country of ours. Gary F.
