No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Bud the first week is P-week (processing). The infamous peanut butter shot, learning to march, make beds, stand at attention. The second week training begins in earnest. Remember to write often and show your support.

Well, Jeff is one week today into boot camp, and we received the form letter with the information on what to expect , with a cover letter from Capt. Peterson, the Commanding Officer at RTC. It indicates there are nine weeks of basic training; until now, I thought it was eight weeks - anyone have input on this? We were happy to see the "Recruit's Comments" section at the end of the letter. Jeff indicated things are going pretty good after the first week, and is starting PT this week. He seems to be in good spirits, now if he continues to be!

Hi Jim ... That is what i meant by next rank up the ladder..Rate! He was told,by whom i have no idea, that he would get the next rate up at the end of BC,but it just seems odd to me that anybody in the cadre would be mentioning that kind of info. prior to Battle Stations.

Hey Jim, congratulations on your new sailor, Aaron. The first phone he called on must have been the same one my son used last Saturday. Buck was able to call for the first time after four weeks, and he had to yell for us to hear, even then it sounded like he was whispering.Unfortunatly all the phones were busy, but we got to hear from him a little and he sounded good. I 'm sure he was asked more than once if we were deaf, lol. Oh well, 25 more days till we can yell at each other face to face, and it cant get here fast enough.

Hi, Steve

Not sure what you mean by the question "picking up the next rank up the ladder" after Battle Stations.

They normally get the pay for their rate (E-1 through E-3) based on their contract the entire time they are in Boot Camp. They do not get to wear the actual insignia until they graduate...

Is that what you are asking about?

Well all,had a phone call from James today. He sounded good other than a cold.He said he is running a slight fever, nothing to get worked up about. Passed his final pt test and said he has one more inspection to pass, firefighting, then Battlestations.
Question,do they normally tell them prior to passing Battlestations that they will be picking up the next rank up the ladder? Seems a little premature to me. That is all for now ,everyone have a fantastic Sunday.

Aaron made it through Battle Stations and we got a phone call from him Friday morning. We could not hear him, so we had him try another pay phone and it worked better (something to keep in mind if you get a call from an Illinois number and it seems like there is no one on the other end. He could hear us but we couldn't hear him).

He is doing great and looking forward to his PIR this Friday and heading down to Goose Creek for his "A" school and Nuke training. We will probably only get a few hours max ith him but we intend to make the most of it!

My son Aaron is in Division 142 and will go through Battle Stations tonight...really hoping they all pull together and get through it as a team!

My wife and I are looking forward to PIR next Friday, can't wait to see him again!

Hi michael.Yea,that is the only thing in this whole B.C. experience that worries me right now if the whole Div. is not working as one.Probably worrying for nothing.I know as an individual James has come a long ways and with the things he did while in high school with FFA and building a house for "Habitat for Humanity" and the such he knows about teamwork, but he gets a little short when the person next to him does not pull their weight.Guess i will go and write him another letter to remind him to just take a deep breath, and pick up the slack if that should happen. {:-)

Good news Steve. Its all down hill from there. My son said Battlestations was a walk. He said all you had to do was pay attention.
