No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Welcome, Bill!

Yes, your son's recruiter should be able to give you his address tomorrow. When my son left, we wrote several letters before we were able to get his address then mailed them all at once. It will be some time before his first mail call (not until they are done processing and make it to their Ship) so your letters will get there before then...

The videos have a lot of good information, my wife and I both enjoyed them!

Good luck as you make the transtition, and ask as many questions as you need to, we are all here to help!

Bill, yes the recruiter is the fastest way to get the ship/div #. Once you have that, the link above that says Contact Your Sailor has the address.

Hello to the members of Boot Camp. I guess it's about time I join. My Sailor arrived at GL March, 4th. His rank is CTT
I may have about a thousand questions, hope I don't drive everyone crazy.
So far I have not been able to track down his address, but monday (tomorrow) I'll try to call his recuriter. I hear that is the quickest way to find his address. Last week we said Anchors Away and now it is

Its official, Nicholas A is now an official Navy Sailor. Just got the call. Divisions 112, 113,114,115 finished battle stations at 10:00 hours today. They surprised them by having Battle Stations early.

one thing Aaron wanted was McDonalds. For dinner we wnet to the lonestar steakhouse. It wasn't bad but I am sure not the best around. Someone had suggested a place called I think the Backyard Grill in Gurney We found it but we were so tired that we did not want to wait for the opening. We too let Aaron pick the agenda so he could have a little freedom. One thing I did buy him at the Burkey NEX was a challange coin that had the Sailor's Creed on it this was my personal present to him for graduating RTC. Earlier he had recieved two different coins for being chosen Honor Graduate from his division. These were presented by the reviewing officer and the CO of RTC. He is now in Charlston SC and loves it.

Dave, Bob, Joe,

Thanks for all the info. Very helpful to go ahead and plan our trip.
I may opt for refundable flights if still reasonably priced.
I didn't think, but letting him pick the pace is a good idea.
My youngest son, 17, says that he would be willing to wait it out if necessary, so I think we are all going, can't wait!
All the suggestions, so far have been great, phone card, letters and support. I'm searching for flights and hotels now.

Thanks,
Talk later.

My son was chafing from his dress blues until he put his shorts on under them. He to hates the Navy issue underwear. He went to Charlston on Wednesday and I think the first thing he bought was boxers. he would have worn his kaki shirt and black trousers but he will not get his initial issue of trousers until some time later this year. Manufacturing snafu. Oh and they LOVE the 14 button fly to go to the bathroom

Joe
Yes that was my son by the sign. we were down on the other sde of the reviewing stand so we did no see him right away. That and the fact we were so tired from the ordeal of getting there that he could have been in front of us and we may not have seen him. Arnold We took the chance that there would not be a problem with Aaron graduating and bought non refundable tickets because they were cheap. we also scoured priceline and other services for rental cars and such and my wife found a rental in chicago from Alamo for $10.00 a day. The Navy lodge isn't fancey but the price and location are great $60.00 per night I think and about a mile from the gate. When you go to Gurney Mills watch for the detour signs. They changed the traffic pattern around so it was a bit difficult but could be worse. The train to chicago leaves from right next to RTC. You can ride the thing all weekend for $5.00 bucks. Hope the weather is better for you than it was for us. Go enjoy yourself Your child only gets one PIR

I agree with Joe, with the small number of Div.'s scheduled you should be able to get the extra person in. My son PIR'd back in Sept. and it was packed in the drill hall. As far as planning places to eat and such, you may want to find out if your son is going to be a grad and go or not, and he may not know until near the end of boot camp. We were lucky and we had most of the weekend to spend with our son, others in his Div. started leaving Friday night /Saturday morning. As far as where to go and what to do, we let him decide, after all we figured he had just spent the last 8 weeks being told what to do and when to do it, he needed a couple days to relax and move at his pace. All he really wanted to do was get some "unhealthy food" (we went to Olive Garden" and get some non-navy issue underwear back on, so that was a stop at WalMart. The rest of the weekend he was happy to just lay around without getting told what to do. Rember, they have to be in full uniform all weekend if they are out in public, so try and bring along something like those little disposable "Shout" stain removers in case of oops during dinner. Good luck to your son, and rember to bring your camera for pictures at PIR and plenty of tissue's (after all the mom's do get emotional, when that door opens and they march in, unlike us macho dad types........................LOL).
