Our son graduated this weekend, also. I had a watched a PIR online awhile back. It was nice, but being there in person was much better. If possible for you, I highly recommend going and supporting your new Sailor. It was well worth it for us. Everyone we dealt with was very nice and accommodating to us and the Sailors. It was also nice getting to meet and talk with his Senior Chief RDC and some of the officers.

Hey Eric Congrats! Thanks for sharing your PIR experience and tips! And as a divorced parent myself like Paul, #7 is a big one as some folks unfortunately will tend to use this happy occasion and turn it into an ugly one. Tell me more about the steak at Lovell's sounds really good! heheh...

Your point #7 needs to be taken to heart by all dealing with divorce and separation issues.   Though my two sailor's mom and I are also divorced, we sat together as a family, ate together, and planned for liberty time together.  Remember your sailors call your former spouse mom or dad so cowboy up, act civil, and GET ALONG for your sailor's sake.  And give your sailor some time alone with their mom or dad....they deserve it and regardless of your family situation, they are just as proud of what your sailor has accomplished as you are. Accidentally erased my last post so let's try again. I attended my daughters PIR this weekend and I can say it was one of the most moving experiences for me. If it all possible make sure you go see your kids. Here are the things I learned while I was there

#1. Use and abuse every piece of information in this site. Great resources from the folks that have been there done that. Made me feel like an expert!!!!

#2 don't know if I would do Midway again, but I am a cheapskate and Southwest doesn't fly into O'Hare.

#3 I rented a car. Proved easier for me

#4 stayed at Residnece Inn. Very nice close to Sarge's meet and greet. They take care of the sailors and the families. Few minutes from base and base is easy to get to if you follow the cheat on how to beat traffic. It will save about an hour.

#5 Sarge's meet and great.......just do it period. Great time good info (although if you have done your homework here it is mostly just a repeat). Got info for the best dining experience here

6# food. EVERYONE here loves your sailor and is proud of what they are doing for our country. Sailor's food prices are reflected accordingly. Make sure you tip accordingly. We had dinner at Lovell's of Lake Forest. It is owned by Capt. James Lovell of Apollo 13 fame. It is high end steakhouse. Expect to pay $80 plus a person but it is worth it. The best steak I have ever had!!!!! Impeccable service and filled with Naval Aviation and NASA memorabilia. Capt. Lovell is a proud US Naval Aviator and lives his sailors.

#7. This is more personal but think it is good advice. If you are divorced and your ex is going be sure to play nice for the sake of your sailor. What worked for me was lunch and dinner with the ex and our sailor. Since my ex was going to be with her at O'Hare and I was flying out of midway I took our daughter to my hotel for a few hours to get some one on one time. Worked out great. Sailor was able to call step family with no "awkward" feelings anywhere. Again worked in iur situation. I did see one lady who doesn't get along with her ex so she had difficult time. I don't know the dynamics of the relationship and not going to pretend to do so. So if possible play nice for your sailor.

It was a great trip and I would have loved to see more of Chi Town but schedule didn't allow it. My little girl is now a strong independent woman who is loving navy life. If any of you have questions feel free to shoot me a message.
