No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Gary, I understand your concerns regarding possible delays. It seems to be an issue for many of the rates. After PIR, Billy was on hold for 6 weeks before starting SCC. But, after that he went directly to ATT and then A-School for IC. While on hold, Billy did not have to do very much in the way of mundane duties. He was able to get a position as some kind of assistant to the staff of the ship he was at while on hold. He really enjoyed doing it and earned the respect of the staff at the same time. He will most likely be getting a C-School which could put him back on hold depending on the location and space available in the class. If he is put on hold after A-School, he's going to volunteer to help in the classroom where they do their lab work/studies. If Nicholas does experience any delays, you might mention to him that there are other opportunities available to him.

Well Paige thanks for your thoughts. I too have kept my phone on all night and day. I should be getting my Wednesday letter. Its better then nothing. Once Basic is finished my next concern will be the delays in training.

Gary, I'm sorry you haven't gotten a call yet : ( Darn that dental work, huh? I would think you will be getting a call very soon. My first call came on a sunday afternoon. I knew it was Billy because I looked up the area code for GL right after he left. I kepted my cell phone glued to my hip for the entire time Billy was in BC. I'm glad Nicholas has been able to get lots of letters to you!!

I received four letters from Nicholas. Still no call! He had a chance last week but missed out because he had another tooth pulled. Don't know when he will call, keeping fingers crossed. He is in week 5, probably get to talk during the PIR on 13/03/09.

It occurred to me this week as multiple people asked me if I had heard from my son that many do not understand that in the initial stages of recruit training no news really is good news.

The only reason to hear from a recruit in the first couple of weeks is if something went wrong...if there was an injury, illness, or they have had some other sort of problem. We should expect a call or letter sometime around the third week, but probably not before.

Just food for thought for those of us having trouble accepting the lack of contact with our sons and daughters.

Do we have anyone here who has someone PIR on 022709? My son is in div 108 ship 12.

I think that date is like a moving target and when we get closer i am sure they will lock it in providing no setbacks.
Thanks for the info Jim
