No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

I'm sure the calls are coming tonight, The Navy knows that most parents work and it will difficult to get a hold of us during the day. My son is in Division 120 so I assumed,  119 and 120 were the first ones to go. I will  post something as soon as I hear please do the same

Chris, my son is in A-School in San Antonio. It's grueling and strict, but he has had some freedoms to go off base to the mall or even a rodeo. He is allowed civilian clothes at certain times. We didn't overload him like college dorm because at the end in June, he needs to transport it or ship it back to us. So we were trying to keep him to a few essentials and comforts.

Rick is correct, after PIR my son flew to A-School at 3pm Saturday. He was taken to the airport at 5am that morning so he had all day to wait. He checking in with the USO and then came and met us at the ticket Counter. They gave us temporary passes to go into the consourse. So we went through security and spent the day with him just chatting, walking the airport, lunch and meeting some of the other sailrors. It was really nice and made the departure fairly easy on the emotions after only seeing him a little bit on Friday.
Good Luck.

Unless its changed drastically in the last 18 months, your sailor will be able to wear a watch after PIR. The restrictions pertain primarily to electronics as to what can be taken back to their ship. If you meet your sailor at the airport before their departure, you can pass on their electronics. and if you meet your sailor before departure you can get a gate pass to wait with them before flying out. The USO can assist if need be. Chris, your sailor will have different phases as to how much freedom they have. Its called phasing up. Best of luck to your sailor....and you!

Great Ideas, thank you.  I guess A school is not as strict as boot camp and is more like a campus?

Chris....an engraved Challenge coin is always a nice idea. You can choose a Rating or other coin from those available. Many of us have started this and added to the collection as our Sailors progress...

The rule is that you can't leave anything with them at PIR but you can ship things to A-School after they are there and settled. I shipped my son his watch, computer, civilian clothes, etc. The watch is a nice gift and I am sure it will be appreciated. You may have to give it to him at PIR, take it back and then mail it in a few days.

I have the same question as Tony.  I would like to get my son something that he could keep/use when he goes to A school.  I don't know what would be an authorized item would be in A school.

was going to say...keep it low key, keep it black and remember it will be used at work......
