No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Hello purple pig!! Welcome to the site and all. I got a letter from my son today and he was very depressed about the division that he was transferred to after failing to meet his PT requirement. He said that he was in DIV 2444...which I imagine is a transient type of division. Do you have any insight on that?

Does anyone know where I can find information on a Surface Engineer? "SENG" I believe. My son said he will attend A school across the street from boot camp but I can't find anything on his job. He also said they might call it a MM Mechanist Mate but that seems so broad.

Tim- I'm sure sorry to hear that your son has gotten delayed. Hopefully, if it's an injury or a failure to qualify on something he can get it recover and get back in an active division. I've heard of other situations like that including a couple kids in our son's division who missed a couple weeks of training cycles. I also think if there were a real serious issue that would lead to an early discharge you would have heard that by now. Please do let us know - we're praying for him. Glen

Tim I'm not sure of leave. As for leaving boot camp before graduating I don't think he can do that. I could be wrong though. I'll look into it and see if I can come up with more. Maybe someone else will see this post and have a more accurate answer.

Thank You for the prompt response. He will be going to sub school following boot camp. I was hoping to find out if he had any chance of a Holiday Leave.

Tim their are a list of factors for not graduating on time. If you fail battle stations you are set back. I don't believe this would be the reason though. The timed run is what a lot of recruits struggle with. If you don't pass it you are set back. If you get in trouble, have a medical set back, injury, etc the list go's on. Hopefully he will be able to call home soon to fill you in on why he has been set back. I do know no matter what the setbacks are your recruit can stay there for months before graduating. They will give them ever opportunity to pass all qualifications to become a Sailor. I hope this helps a little but I know it doesn't help you on making travel arrangements. He should call and tell you of the setback and the new division he is in and then you'll be able to find the new PIR date. Best of luck. Let us know when you receive word.

My son's graduation date was dec 5th, h called us last wednesday to say that he was not going to be eligible to graduate on the 5th for some reason. HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSES SON? I was curious as to how long it would be before he has a new grad date so that i could reschedule my airline tickets.

My son, had PIR 12/05/08, very impressive! Minus 6 degrees wind chill, walking to drill hall due to construction and waiting to enter took 45 minutes. as recruits waited outside over an hour to march in @ 9:00. I recomend Courtyard Marriott it is quite close with stores, restaurants and Starbucks in walking distance, schedule the shuttle the night before. The hotel provided a nice information package and several local recomendations from the front desk. There were 893 grads , make sure you note the division signage on the drill floor prior to selectiong your seat, many, many, many familiies just sat down and then discovered their sailor was at the other end of drill hall. Also note this time of year, unless your sailor is 5' or 6'6" all others in between look exactly the same with winter coats, covers and white scarves over their faces! Enjoy your visit.
