No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

got the scripted call from my son last night. He let me know he made it to bootcamp and he was fine.He also said that we would be receiving the box in two weeks. hopefully I will hear from him soon. It didn't seem this hard when I went to bootcamp years ago. Now that I'm on the otherside, it is tough to let go.
It's good to know that some recruits fly out of Midway, not necessarily O'Hare, heading out to their A training. I still have no idea of my son's itinerary after his ceremony on 10/18, and my guess is that he doesn't, either.
Thanks Tom! It would be nice if he is flying out of the same airport as us around the same time, but I bet I have a better chance of getting struck by lightning!
Bob...you will have to go to the Airline desk with your Sailor. They will issue you a pass to accompany your Sailor to the gate and get through the Security Checkpoint.
Thanks for that information Mark!
Jim - First off, thanks for the fun facts. Very cool!
second, so you're saying skip the USO and just go through security to the terminal?
Yes Bob,
We met our son at Midway Airport at about 12:30am. That was when the Navy dropped them off to go to his next command. The airlines have arranged to give the family security passes so you can go to the gate with him. I know that Ohara has a USO Club outside of Security that you are allowed inside with your sailor.
Has anyone here ever met their Sailor at the airport after PIR, before they fly out to A school? I was wondering if we would be able to do that if my son flies out Friday night. We will only be in Chicago until early Saturday morning, so any time spent with him will be great!
Thanks again for all the tips! Hopefully we get to spend some time with him before he heads down to Pensacola. Still no PW for the gate pass, but I think we're just going to have Sarge drop us off at the gate and walk in. We will be flying out of JFK at 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning and then renting a car to drive to the Navy Lodge. Then we're heading to the "Meet and Greet" Thursday evening. We are looking forward to it.
Got the scripted call that our son Alex is in boot camp. Sooo wishing I could be a fly on the wall, I'm sure it would be sooo entertaining!
