No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

I spoke to my son son for 20 minutes and he called my wife before that, so we both had a nice conversation with him. He also received a bunch of letters yesterday and will be able to write a few tomorrow.

as a follow-up Nathan....this is from RTC's website:

Because space is limited in the barracks, recruits may receive letters and small photographs only. Please do not send your recruit packages of civilian clothing, toiletries, food items, etc. as they will not be permitted to keep them.

Comment by NavyDads Admin (Paul) on August 2, 2013 at 8:12pm

Nathan- you can send letters......and that's all!  Care packages and anything larger than what can be fit in an envelope is a no-no.  And about that envelope....no glitter or musical cards!!!!!

Grad and go's will also get liberty immediately after PIR. They do have to be back on base by 1900 or 2000, but we had enough time to spend the day in Chicago with our son.

Grad and go's will leave the early morning after PIR. You can meet and visit them at the airport until their flights leave (Sat afternoon). ONLY those that are attending A School at Great Lakes will have the weekend to visit.

Yes, the amount of time we have with the new Sailors depends on a lot of things.  Our daughter had to call the duty desk twice daily at assigned time to learn if she had duty or not.  But, she was also at GL for A School, so no travel was in the offing.  Those with travel orders, especially very early Saturday, may have limited time the evening of PIR, but you may also be able to spend time with them at the airport after they arrive there.  The Navy provides their transportation.

My daughter after PIR on on June 14th was allowed to go off base with us  till about 8:00pm.We went to downtown Chicago and and had a very nice day. She left GL some time after midnight and flew the next day (Saturday) to her A school assignment at Pensacola, Fla. as did many of her fellow graduates. Plan on visiting her at Pensacola.
