No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

I did get the calling card codes from them as well and sent them out to him yesterday. Thanks!

@Nathan - I will definitely let you know as things happen. We will be flying into O'Hare Thursday morning and heading back to NY Saturday morning. My son is going to A school in Pensacola, so we are hoping to maybe get a little time with him after PIR. The letter we received earlier this week stated those leaving Great Lakes for A school typically leave the day after PIR. I am sure that is not always the case, but w are hoping to get some quality time with him before he leaves.

I spoke to my son a few times today. Apparently they needed another reference and photo copy of his passport in order to continue processing his security clearance. He also spoke to my wife. He sounded great and in good spirits. When my wife told him to make sure he adds my in-laws to the guest list if possible, he said OK. That leads me to believe he did not do it yet. Maybe some groups have done it and some haven't. Who knows.. I am sure we'll know more soon enough.

I booked our flight and 2 rooms at the Navy Lodge last night. Also reserved a rental car at O'Hare.

My son is ship 12, Division 349.

Jim - Page 3 was left out of mine. No guest list and no password for gate pass.

I understand that a recruit can be injured or etc. My plans are to reserve our flights to GL. And to get more info before we purchase the tickets. Thanks so much for the info.

We received the letter today. The PIR date is September 13. There was nothing with 4 lines or guests names. We still do not know how many guests are allowed. I guess we'll see when they update their website.

Thank you for the info.

Your sailor will fill in the names but the list can be changed, by him, up until about a week before PIR.

My son filled in the names of my wife, his girlfriend, myself...and Oreos. Sigh...

On the letter I received recently from Capt. Dye my Grandson filled in the blanks for his guest. We have the same PIR date 13 Sept. my grandson is in Div 347 and I understand he is in a push Div. which means they will complete basic in 7 weeks rather than 8 so I am not sure if 13 Sept is still a go.

@Nathan, I want to say it was fairly early on.  Probably his 2nd or 3rd letter.  I would say it was by week 3.
