No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Yes LOL! It was only a one owner vehicle too! The important thing is none of this bothers my son (which is all that is truly important). His response: "I guess I'll find out when the time comes!" Believe me I will get through this too! Just the new Navy dad jitters. But I really appreciate this site and the support/answers provided.

Vincent my son did the same thing when he went on leave after A School he checked in with his recruiter, helped out on an INDOC and other duties and got some days credited back...

Sounds like a good recruiter.  You heard what you wanted.  LOL!  And remember, the car just had the oil changed and new tires put on, too.  (No mention of any alignment, brakes or why it is having oil changed every 500 miles or so - except that was left out.)  Jobs are all based on availability.  If there is no slot available you sit in the rank level for a long time.  People are forever dealing with that, especially in the cycles of force reductions, budget cuts, needing more and more people, and back again.  I knew a Marine who was the range director or something like that at Twentynine Palms MCB.  He retired from the Corps, and within about six months was back doing the same job, but as a civilian.

Tom just saw your response. Maybe that is the case and she believes he will accrue 2 weeks. Is that accrued time based on rate? In other words would he accrue more over the same length of time as an E-3 as opposed to an E-1?

Chris no worries! I would rather have the blunt truth. I realize my son belongs to the Navy for the next 4 years at least. When I encouraged my son to consider it all I asked for was facts. He and I sat down and compiled a list of questions for the recruiter and we received answers. We were told (and I do have this in written text message) that he would get 2 weeks off after A school. That now may not be the case. He was also told that the Navy was the only branch he was guaranteed the job he wanted and would sign a contract. That was only partially true. What they failed to tell him ( which wasted 3 hours of time reviewing) was only if the job was available. When it came time to make a decision at MEPS there were only 2 jobs available to him (and mind you he scored a 245 on the ASVAB qualifying him for every enlisted job). It turned out fine as one of the two did interest him. All I am saying is that I can live with the reality of Navy life.....I just want to know the truth straight up no matter how difficult.

My daughter who graduated as an AM with an E-3 rating attended A school in Pensacola and I drove 12 hours each way and stayed on base at the Navy Lodge for a weekend during Spring Break in 2012. After A School my daughter received 2 weeks leave which she was able to save some of her leave by checking in with her recruiter. I don't know if what happened to my daughter can happen elsewhere . I am sure every case is different. However, I don't believe it is a hard and fast rule everywhere.

....Bill....He will have accrued leave time by the end of A School that he can use. There was also a program that if they worked at the local Recruiting Office while at home, they were not charged for those days. I'm not sure if that is still in play....

Bill:  Didn't mean to be so blunt, if you read my former comments, but they aren't in the Navy long enough in just boot camp to earn two weeks' leave before A School.  We did the same thing, but think of it as he's got two families now - Navy and the one he was raised in.  What happens if he at some point gets married, and there are in-laws, too?  I didn't even get a call on the entire Father's Day weekend one year - but knew in advance they were going to be in communications black-out for about 10 days.  But after 20-some years, even knowing, didn't entirely compensate for not hearing from her.

Ok, here is what the recruiter really said and not what dad wanted to hear! :-) My son goes directly to A school from boot camp and gets 2 weeks leave upon completion of A school. For those of you who have sailors beyond A school was that your experience as well? Thank you!

That is awesome for your daughter Vincent :-) My daughter is an AO3 she was with the VFA-37 at NAS Oceana until this past week. She is expecting a baby and can not be deplyed so she is changing commands and will now be with HSC-2 Fleet Angels in Norfolk. Maybe our daughter's paths will cross sometime in the future :) I am actually going there for a visit this week and can't wait to get there.

I agree about the letters, they live for mail call, we wrote every single day she was in boot camp :)
