No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Just got off the phone with my daughter and she is doing well.  Just to confirm what Paul said earlier, she said that the letters help A LOT.  We have made it a rule that a letter goes out everyday so that as much as we are able, she will never have a mail call where she doesn't get mail.  As a Navy veteran, I can also tell you that my wife and I wrote to each other everyday while I was out to sea and it kept us going through the months apart.

For those interested, my daughter began as an E-3 partly because she graduated with a Bachelors degree. She did the DEP a month after her graduation from college. She went in January 9, 2012. The day before Thanksgiving 2012, she was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class. She has been assigned to the famous Blackhawks HM-15 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Nothing is more important to the success of your child.
The only way to assist your child is to write letters every day. More in these times then previous because our children are so used to instant communication.
They need to prepare to be without.
As a parent you need to get over the shock of the empty box (except for their clothes)and continue to write letters until they make PIR.
How they do in this part of the process depends heavily on your support. Only with your support can you succeed.
You can succeed with the support of the best group in place for this.

Any word on the integrated division Captain's Cup winners.  I see that Div. 81 was cited as winning but I don't think that division is in this group.

LadyHawk Congrats and BZ to DIV 806!

Congratulations to this week's Captain's Cup winners! Taking top honors for the non-integrated (all-male) divisions was Div. 805, and taking top honors for the integrated (male-female) divisions was Div. 081.

As a very proud dad heading into PIR (graduation) week here are some suggestions that worked for me.  Read, read, read everything on this site from the titles above under the Boot Camp Heading and those to the right above the smiley sailor carrying the big bundle and everything in between.  The guys that put this site together have done a remarkable job for you to become informed and enlightened.  I commend them on their success with this!  Write, write, write as much as you can.  Read my post a few pages  back if other family members (i.e. mom) are writing often too.  Mail call comes with a cost as you will read.  One issue I had read somewhere was that a direct correlation exists between getting mail and an SR's likelihood of successful completion of boot camp.  My wife and daughter wrote to many sailors not getting mail; sometimes sending out 14 letters a day!  It is a small act that means so much for a lonely kid.  My SR wanted me to include ongoing current events but quite frankly, the only thing I have really been concerned with the last 8 weeks has been getting home and checking the mail; I really haven't cared a rip about anything else.  The other thing that has got me through this process was truly believing that NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!    This is a double edged sword especially when it comes to the phone.  You want to hear their voice, and you will, but every call coming in from some unknown source makes your heart skip a bet.  You will freak out when you realize you left your phone somewhere other than in your pocket.

You cannot imagine how much we and our SRs will change in just a few weeks.  The sorrowful tears you try to blink away in private will soon be driven by pride which you'll wear with honor.  I am proud of my son more than I thought possible and I am honored that he will have the opportunity to serve with your SR.  Strong Work Dads!

Will do! And have already used it to gather a great deal of information. This site should be mandatory issue from the recruiter to the recruits Dad upon signing. It has been more than a blessing!

Thank you Tom and Paul! I really appreciate your comments and insight. Sometimes you feel like you are the only one going through these feelings! I know you are right about seeing graduation and how my boy will be a man! I will not wear a shirt with buttons to PIR!
