No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Charles- if your son is in a "push" or accelerated division it could 7 weeks....when you get the form letter it will have the projected PIR date...that could slip if he has medical issues and is delayed

You're welcome.  And welcome to the family.  Those of us who have gone through it before relive every moment with each new person coming board.  Two years from now, you will get the same feeling each week as people have their children, bothers, sisters, etc., building up for PIR - knowing what a wonderful experience it is.  Or being lucky enough after a couple years to have your child home for their birthday, Mom's birthday, or Thanksgiving or Christmas.  Our lives change as much as their's do.

Thanks Chris! Yes I understand the hurry up and wait....but not as well as my son. At MEPS for the processing and physical I thought he was going to bolt based on all the time he spent sitting and waiting. But that was his first lesson in military discipline!
I appreciate the insight into boot camp and the timing. Dad too will learn some military discipline and just wait until someone tells me to be at RTC! :-)

Bill:  No and no.  It is military, hurry up and wait.  LOL!  They don't run exactly on schedule except the time you expect some delays, and then there won't be any.  As for BS and PIR - normally in the same week.  Sometimes two days before PIR, sometimes not.  Go with the flow, you'll get used to it.  Our daughter stayed at Great Lakes for A School, but was moved three times and didn't start school until two weeks after the initial time was said.  It happens.

My son will enter boot camp on Wednesday May 1. Can anyone tell me if it ends at precisely 8 weeks and thus in this case would complete on June 26? Or can this vary by a few days? Also typically how long is it between the actual completion (battle station) and the PIR?

Philip ~ Welcome Philip.... I'm new here too.  My daughter's PIR is 3/15 as well but she is in Ship 02 Div 918.

Congratulations to this week's Captain's Cup winners! Taking top honors for the non-integrated (all-male) divisions was Div. 805, and taking top honors for the integrated (male-female) divisions was Div. 081.

Captain's Cup is a fun, friendly athletic event held the Saturday prior to graduation for those divisions set to graduate. Events include activities such as basketball, volleyball, relay races and more.
