No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Little confused here. I saw where two other SR's called home and were able to say exactly when they were doing Battle Stations. I thought I had it all figured out based on the number of Divisions set for PIR on 28 Sept. Guess I was wrong. I haven't heard a word and here we are on the Saturday before PIR. Hopefully I'll get some news tomorrow based on my SR's last letter. Any insight to settle me down would help. Thx.
Gary, I got a letter today dated 16 Sept. In it, Colin says he'll talk to me Sunday which I assume will be 23 Sept (5 days before PIR). Maybe he is saying he's not going to be able to make the call til then. No worries. I am still going to do as I have done since he left and have my phone with me every minute of the day (including sleeping with it) :-)
Sean keep your phone close to your heart and look out for that (847) area code. The excitement of PIR still fresh in my mind... :P
One week from today, I'll be winging my way to the RTC to see my son's PIR. Arrangements are all made and the excitement is mounting. Anxiously awaiting the "I am a sailor" call. Hopefully today or tonight. Hope to see others from NavyDads.com while I'm there!
Nope. I don't know how they figure it out, but our daughter had to call morning and evening to see if she had watch. At the same time, people going to the same school with her had scheduled duty and not leave that weekend.
Scott: It depends. Some have liberty. Some have liberty most of the time, but may need to stand a watch. Some have liberty, but are told to call in twice daily "in case." You will know when he's through moving (which can take three or four hours after PIR) and calls to let you know he's released.
Congratulations Bob! Thanks for posting about your experience. That is quite an award your son received. My son will be following yours a few weeks. He is in the same job and rating also. Not sure how quick the classes class up but they will be pretty close in training.
Well our Boot Camp experience is over, MAtts PIR was on Friday 09/14. An amazing experience, so proud to see all those young Men and Women Graduating. I am happy to say Matt was awarded the "Military Excellence Award" so proud. He shipped out Saturday for Goose Creek in Charleston, SC for Nuclear Engineering after his MM training.
We stayed at Spring Hill Suites which was Great, they do have special rates for PIR families, it is located about 4 miles from base. We also attended Sarge's Meet and Great, at the Sun Dance Saloon. Very informative and got to meet several other families (over 250 attended). The whole area is geared to supporting the Sailors and Families.
