No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Ship 09 DIV 210 PIR 070612 anyone else have a recruit on this ship?

wondering why you might not get the calls and contact from RTC you'd like? Because your recruits are learning how to handle and live through this kind of emergency:

this day in 1987 USS Stark (FFG-31) was struck by two Iraqi Exocet Missiles in the Persian Gulf, killing 37 Sailors and wounding 21. Brought under control, she sailed to Bahrain and was later repaired at Ingalls Shipbuilding, Mississippi. Following subsequent tours in the Middle East area, Stark was decommissioned in 1999 and later scrapped in 2006.

Paul- congrats! you have the correct mindset for this Navy journey.  So many parents cannot handle the loss of constant contact.....write your letters!

Jim, Everything will be great and the weeks fly by. My wife sent him letters everyday and they receive them everyday. She puts the sports box scores from the newspaper as well and he shares this with everyone. We've even heard he's using these as a type of currency for favors. Just have fun with it.

Jim,

My son just shipped out Monday. I understand the emotion, as it was the toughest goodbye I've ever said. I had to create a healthy mindset that included acceptance of the reasons for not being in close contact with home: he's adjusting to Navy culture and becoming a crewmate--his mates deserve his focus on that; he must prepare to be out of contact for prolonged periods depending on deployment and rating; the privilege of a healthy SR is just that: a privilege--and if it can be earned, then I trust that the Navy can dole it out as it sees fit--they've been doing things right since 1775.

So for now, enjoy your time, bolster his mindset and remind him that you love him. Let him know you'll write and how often (I've already started though I can't even send the letters yet). Most importantly be a source of strength for him. His mental fortitude will be necessary and valuable.

For me, though I was sad to see him leave for 6 years, I am proud that he chose to serve others.

Finally, remember that at least you'll know where he is.

By order of the Commanding Officer, Naval Station Great Lakes, areas of downtown Chicago is off-limits to MILITARY PERSONNEL IN UNIFORM, between May 18-22, 2012 during the The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit.

Newly graduated Sailors must remain in complete uniform at all times, civilian attire is strictly prohibited.

A map outlining the off-limits area will be printed in the May 18, 2012 Pass-In-Review/Graduation program.

The off-limits areas include:
• Northern Boundary: West Division St.
• Eastern Boundary: Lake Michigan
• Southern Boundary: East 47th St.
• Western Boundary: Interstate 94
