No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

I am so sorry this is happening Merrill. Every once in a while something like this happens. Please keep the faith and try to not let your fustration overwhelm your thinking. As I stated in an earilier message, I had separated my shoulder in Army basic and was released on a medical. I required surgery to fix it. I kept all my documents through the Freedom of Information Act. After recovery I worked hard to build up my arm and shoulder. I researched what was "medically requied" for reentry. All the while I kept in contact with my congressmen, senators, and anyone else who I thought would have an impact on my reentry attempt. It took me a year but I finally made it and retired 24 years later. So Merrill, DO NOT GIVE UP! Your daughter may feel depressed and upset enough without you feeding into it. Support her and tell her it is not the end. Only the beginning of a long fight to get to where she wants to be. Mostly don't let her quit or give up on her dream. This is just a speed bump. They can either slow you down or stop you. YOU two make the decision. Good luck to the both of you. I want you to know that as a Veteran, I am very proud of ANY son or daughter who makes the decision to serve their country. Pass or not. - Rick
Spoke with Out Processing. They will not tell us her itinerary at all. They did say they were aware of her request to be sent to Minneapolis. Stating privacy issues.
Deborah signed a release for information for legal and medical but we were advised that those did not apply to travel information. The stereotypical government employee comes to mind.
Craig,
We have spoken to her about that. She has asked. No response to her request for her paperwork.
Merill,
Besides doing what the others say (contacting the Representative or Congressman) you need to do something WAY more important. When you daughter calls make dang sure you tell her to keep all of her paperwork. Since this wasn't a pre-existing condition she can file for VA compensation. This is money she is entitled to. All she needs to do is contact your local DAV office (or others) and ask for assistance in filing a VA claim. The DAV is totally awesome! and it's free.

You are correct. My apologizes. My issue lies directly with the situation and personnel involved. Not to extend that issue to the whole. Think first, type second, review third, then erase and do again.
to say you've lost respect for the armed forces is very short sighted...you may have lost respect for command and the way they handled things, but please do not disparage the dedication and sacrifice of the thousands of sailors, soldiers and airmen that put their lives on the line every day.
Spoke with medical, legal and SEPS. Even asked them to have our daughter call back the other day. No call. No idea if she received the message or not. Spoke with someone last night that provided us with a contact in Out Processing. Also was advised by VA that she get her medical packet and hand carry it out with her. My wife has contacted the office of Michele Bachmann. I had a lot of respect for the armed services until this occurred.
Contact your CONGRESSMAN, unless they're on vacation. :)
