No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Wanted to let everyone know that my son's first direct deposit showed up in his Navy Federal account on December 11th. He arrived the night of Nov 24th, just to give you an idea. He already had an account with Navy Federal and took the direct deposit form with him when he left.

Depending on where you live, whether you're going to PIR, and which A school is going to; you may want to send your recruit a phone card for after graduation. I saw several sailors phoning home from pay phones at the airport while awaiting their flights. Otherwise, a phone was provided to our son to phone us.
The eight weeks will fly by.
Please thank him for his service.

Shewww, thanks Joseph !!!  Yes, just to hear his voice will be enough :-)

Ruth,  He will not need a calling card. When they are given permission to call home, they use a phone provided to them at no charge. Please keep in mind the calls are very short with limited information, but just to hear their voice makes you feel better.

I didn't send a phone card with my son, his recruiter said he didn't need one.  From what I've been reading, he does, ugh !  Is he allowed to call collect, or can I send him one with one of me letters ?

So my 18 years old daughter Kenzie has been in DEP for awhile now. She initially went in S-PACT scheduled to leave in April, but was able to change to MA with a ship date to basic on February 9. Recently she has lost motivation and called me up expressing a desire to complete the form to request discharge from DEP. We talked through it and she also talked to some other people and she has, at this point, decided that joining the Navy is still the best thing to do. As a Navy Veteran, I am very proud of her for making the decision to join the Navy and think that she would really enjoy it. I think she simply struggles with the same issue that anyone who joins the military struggles with.. the fact that no one really knows what it is going to be like and what happens if you just hate it. I also think that the 4 year commitment is a bit difficult for kids her age because it seems like it is a long time... we all know it isn't.  So, I guess I am looking for anyone else that has been through this, how you handled it, and just any other suggestions that anyone may have in case she does this again in a few weeks. Ultimately it is her decision, but as her parent I feel like I am obligated to try and guide her in making decisions.

Thanks,

Tracey

Attended our son's PIR on December 11th. We never thought eight weeks could be soooooo long but go by so fast. Treasure every letter, call and experience. Please thank him for his service from some guy in Memphis, TN.
