From RTC:

To better accommodate traffic flow on the day after graduation when families and friends pick up Sailors for liberty, a new traffic plan will direct guests to the parking garage adjacent to the USS Yorktown visitors center, the same place you would park on graduation morning.

Gate 8 (same entrance used on graduation morning) will be open from 6 to 10 a.m. All guests will park in the garage to wait for their Sailors who will meet them there. When dropping off Sailors later in the day, guests will use Gate 6 at Illinois Street and Buckley Road and drop the Sailors off in the chapel parking lot.

Gate 8 will NOT be open to vehicular traffic when returning your Sailors from liberty. Sailors may also be dropped off at Gate 8 to access base on foot via the automated turnstile using their CAC (Common Access Card).

PLEASE NOTE: **ONLY GUESTS WITH GRADUATION TICKETS MAY ACCESS THE BASE WHEN PICKING UP AND DROPPING OFF SAILORS TO AND FROM LIBERTY! PLEASE RETAIN YOUR TICKETS FROM GRADUATION.** GUESTS INTENDING TO PICK UP A SAILOR FOR LIBERTY WITHOUT A TICKET WILL BE TURNED AND MAY HAVE TO PICK UP THEIR SAILOR AT GATE 8.

PIR Moves to Thursdays !

Families and friends of future Sailors: Beginning October 5, 2023, recruit graduations will be conducted on Thursday instead of Friday. This will allow an extra day of off-base liberty for the graduates and their families. Federal holidays, such as Thanksgiving, will push up the graduation to Wednesday.

For a current list of upcoming graduations dates and all graduation information, including instructions for obtaining graduation ceremony tickets, please visit our website at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command > Graduation.

The liberty policy will also change effective October 5.
Enjoy LIBERTY (free time off base) with your NEW SAILOR! Sailors are allowed to spend time off base (Liberty) with their family following the graduation ceremony. The amount of time spent depends upon where your Sailor is going for follow-on training. The Navy is required to transport Sailors to their next command, so Sailors MAY NOT travel to their next command in your vehicle or with tickets purchased by themselves or by you.
• SAILORS REMAINING AT GREAT LAKES FOR SCHOOL: Sailors remaining at Great Lakes for “A” school Will have the following schedule:
o DAY OF GRADUATION: You will normally have free time off base (liberty) with your Sailor from the conclusion of graduation until about 8pm. o DAY AFTER GRADUATION: The next day, your Sailor must check into his or her school before being granted more free time with you time off base (Liberty). You will pick-up your Sailor OFF BASE at the Great Lakes National Museum of the American Sailor between approximately 10am and noon and the Sailor can normally remain with you off base until Sunday evening. For more information about liberty procedures, please contact the school house directly:
o Culinary Specialists (CS): Although this “A” school is located in Virginia, these Sailors will remain in Great Lakes for up to one week to complete additional firefighting training.

o DAY AFTER GRADUATION: The next day you may return through the main gate and pick your Sailor up at approximately 8am in the RTC Chapel parking lot. Once again, the Sailor MUST return to his or her barracks by 9 pm that evening, so plan accordingly.
o SATURDAY MORNING: You may meet your departing Sailor at the airport to say good bye and to give the Sailor any small items he or she may want for “A” School (laptop, a few items of civilian clothing, etc.) but remember your Sailor is already carrying a seabag, garment bag, and back pack!

The Latest Guidance as of September 23rd, 2022

Revised Pass-in-Review Policy

Effective immediately, indoor mask policy is relaxed per CDC guidance. Naval Station Great Lakes (NAVSTAGLKS) returns to HPCON Alpha. Presently, Lake County, Illinois, has a low level of COVID cases. Guests attending the graduation ceremony are NOT required to wear a mask while indoors, for ticket pickup at the Welcome Center, or while indoors at Recruit Training Command.

The number of guests allowed has increased to four, unless there are 11 or more divisions when the maximum number of guests is three. If you have already submitted your guest security access form listing two individuals, please have additional guest information ready to provide to your recruit when they call. All guests must have a ticket including active duty personnel and veterans. (Children 2 & under do not count toward the guest limit.) COVID-19 immunizations are still required for guest attendance. Guests 12 or older need to provide proof of immunization (14 days post final dose,) in the form of a COVID-19 vaccination record card, to attend. If you are unable to provide proof of vaccination, you will not be issued tickets and will not be able to attend graduation. REMINDER: Policies regarding the graduation ceremony can change at any time due to changes in our health protection status and policy. Please continue to follow RTC social media accounts for updates and check www.bootcamp.navy.mil for the most up-to-date information. For specific questions and inquiries, contact the RTC Public Affairs Office.

from RTC:

Guests coming to the Graduation Today, 10 January: We are aware that the rail road crossing gates are malfunctioning on Buckley Ave. and Ray St. The North Chicago Police Department has called Union Pacific Railroad to resolve the issue. Apparently, the melting snow is affecting the circuitry that controls the gates. They informed the police department that it is their top priority to get the gates fixed. Closer to the time of the graduation we will assess the situation and make a decision on delaying graduation start time.

This one of the reasons we suggest everyone check this discussion for info re: the Buckley Road by-pass: http://www.navydads.com/forum/topics/by-pass-buckley-road-traffic-f...

Our PIR was earlier in 2013. Here are a few things that made the trip go really well. You will only get one crack at this once in a lifetime event. Keep it low stress and stay flexible. You are not calling the shots on the schedule you sailor's command does. Just soak up every fantastic moment with your sailor. You will never forget.

Hotel - Navy Lodge is 66.00 a night and there is no tax as it is on base and run by NEX. 1 mile to RTC and the A school drop off point. Nothing is closer. It has every thing you could need. True continental breakfast and free WIFI. Ample parking. Thursday night and Friday gets very busy. It is worth it to arrive Wed night if you can. 1-800-navy-inn.
If you have a recruit who is staying for "A" School in Great Lakes you will do a lot of shuttling to the base. To maximize time with your new sailor I suggest the Navy Lodge.

Air fare: Southwest saved us a ton but only flies into Midway. 250. Round trip from Florida.

Car Rentals are cheaper in the local area but ground transport can take away the savings. If you look at individual companies instead of the Expedia types of sites you will do better. It was worth the patients as we got a minivan out of Midway for 36 a day.

The best thing we did is go to Sarge's Meet and great. This guy will insure that you are prepared. He and his fellow cab drivers hold a cool gathering at the Sundance Saloon and make sure you are prepared for PIR. Everything he said and I mean everything came true on Friday! You must attend this event to maximize your enjoyment. They also offer shuttle service from every hotel by minivan to and from the PIR. Navy lodge does not offer shuttle service so if you want pick up and drop off then they have you covered. $3.00 each way per person.

If your son or daughter has Liberty over the weekend. Take the METRA rail into Chicago. It is fun and there is a weekend pass (for $7 ; active duty $5) fun and there was no car to park. Be advised this is NOT a subway it runs every two hours on the weekend. That caught us off guard so we drove in. We saw Willis "Sears" Tower ($18 ea; active duty is free)

PIR starts at a reasonable time but to get great seats you need to get there early. There are thousands of people who want great seats.

We took our twin sons out for breakfast on Saturday to the Full Moon. It was fantastic, and probably one of the closest to base.

You will love PIR, I know we did!

From RTC:

RECRUIT TRAINING COMMAND STAFF (posted 6 Jan, 0550):
Due to extreme cold temperatures and blowing snow today, 6 January, Naval Station Great Lakes is implementing a 2 hour delayed report time for non-essential personnel. Essential personnel will report on-time. The delayed report will allow the majority of our staff to commute during daylight hours.

Status updates will be posted and staff can contact the command HOTLINE numbers, 847-688-2459 and 847-688-2467, to answer questions you may have.

From News on the Web:

More Than 400 Flights Canceled at Chicago Airports
http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/wireStory/400-flights-canceled-chicago...

My intention here is not to scare anyone off but rather to be more prepared. For those who will be attending PIR for this Friday, January 10th I highly suggest that you please contact your carrier or go online prior to your departure so you'll have up-to-date information of your flight status...

We kind of took a similar route per the link below from O'Hare but we got off of the Loop District for a little bit sightseeing and hopped onto the Metra Train for Waukegan Station. From there it was a 5 minute cab ride to our hotel which offered a shuttle to PIR. A great alternative instead of driving yourself to GL area most especially during snow season...

from RTC:

GRADUATION, 3 JANUARY:
The weather that Great Lakes has been experiencing over the past several days will be ending this afternoon. The graduation on Friday, 3 January, is NOT canceled.

We would like to ask guests to please be cautious if you are driving to and from the graduation. Please keep in mind that many area hotels offer shuttle service; if not, they can assist you in getting taxi service. If you choose to drive, please leave yourself extra time to reach your destination.

from RTC:

RECRUIT TRAINING COMMAND STAFF:
As of 0500 we are changing the Great Lakes status for Thursday, 2 January to ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL ONLY today. Road conditions off base vary greatly and with continued snow today possible whiteout conditions on the roadways leading to base are possible. Please contact your respective duty officers for more information as needed.

At this time Graduation will still take place on Friday, 3 January at 9 a.m. Updates will be posted throughout the day to alert staff and graduation guests of any changes.
