Well said Tim. My daugther is four-years in and my son two-years and I have just as many questions and concerns now as I did for Kat's PIR in Oct. '05. The need for answers never changes, only the questions..........

That's what this site is for Sandy tips from the dads that have been through what you are fixing to go through. My son is almost a year in and I have found alot of wonderful information from the dads that have been where I am going now. As I heard all through school the only stupid question is the one not asked. Someone on here will have the info you need all you have to do is ask the question.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try the Navy Lodge, you have to wait until 30 days out to make reservations, also I need to get use to saying NEX instead of PX...lol. I was at Fort Campbell last week for a reunim with my 10st company that is wasin Vietnam and they gave us 90 minutes in the electronic firing range, I know Molly is going to have a blast with that and firing the real deal. They said they save millions in ammo per month at Fort Campbell due to the use of electronic firing ranges. The far wall is a giant movie screen so they can put you in anmy situation the want even a FBI type shoot or don't shoot since that is what the Army is facing now when they go house to house, very cool equipment indeed.

Sandy,
My wife son, daughter-in-law, grand daughter and I stayed at the navy lodge last August when Trevor PIR'ed. Great place just off base in E-4 housing area with a small convenience store near by. Very close to the front gate for PIR. Wonderful place to stay and very convenient. Ladies at the front desk are well versed in the area and can point you right to the best places to eat, shop or whatever your looking for.
As Paul said the Nex on base fills up qiock as it is very small and all the grads go there to get their first taste of junk food in 8 weeks.
Also like Paul said it is best to go to the NEX just off base on Green Bay. Turn left (West) out of gate turn Right (North) on Green Bay just a few blocks on the left.
Congratulations to you and molly on her PIR and have fun while in Great Lakes.

Sandy- the NEX on base is kinda small and gets pretty packed... the main NEX is just off base (I want to say north on Green Bay road-- but it's been a couple of years now) with easy access from the parking lot. I'm sure there is more info on the internet somewhere about location.....

Molly will graduate July 24th, we will be there, just a 6 hour drive from St. Louis. She is in the choir so that will be an extra treat to see her perform. I'm retired Army and was wondering of anyone has stayed at the Navy Lodge. Also will I be able to take my vehicle on base to go to the Exchange. Is there special seating for disabled persons at PIR and if so are they good seats or should I take an extra pain pill and try for the balcony? Still waiting on that first phome call and letter.

Lunch after PIR - PlanB for those people looking for more than routine chain restaurant fare. This is where the locals go. (I was once a local.)

The Silo in Lake Bluff

Voted the BESTpan pizza on the North Shore by the Chicago Tribune. Deep dish Chicago style pizza to die for.

Less than 10 minutes, from RTC, once you clear the traffic jam at the gate.

More than just fantastic pizza, everything your hungry Sailor has been dreaming of is in on the menu. Burgers, ribs, chili, steak, seafood, homemade cheese cake, etc., etc.

Left out of RTC, .5 mile
Left on Green Bay Road, 2 miles
Right on Rockland Road/SR176 1 mile
The Silo is on the right.

Liberty varies for rate to rate and other factors. Grand-n-go could only be for a couple of hours. When Eric PIR'd, he was grad-n-go across the street. At about 20:00 Friday I was able to pick him up at the base and he had liberty until 18:00 Sunday. Be flexible and be prepared and remember the phrase "needs of the Navy" as that trumps any liberty plans you may have made! Regardless, PIR is awesome--- all you moms know to bring kleenex.....for all you tough dads you can bring shades and say the lights are pretty bright........................
