Quick question . . . my son, Michael, goes to RTC on April 15 and I am trying to figure out his PIR date so that my wife and I can plan. Can someone tell me with a high percentage of confidence that PIR for him will be June 12 or June 19?

Hi all might I drop a line in here that might help you guys out on a way of finding your graduate after liberty is called? My son was in Div. 940 which is the performance group, they are the band compsed of recruits that you will hear play during graduation. The 900 divisions have to stick around after the performance to put away their instruments, so they are easier to find . we had written in the letters to him about curiosity of being able to find him after graduation. about 2 weeks before graduation he was talking to one of his RDC's and they told him that if he were in one of the other divisions that alot of times recruits tell their parents to go outside of the great hall and find them there. When I got inside of the hall and seen how many recruits there actually were I seen that this was not a bad idea and how much easier it would be to find them outside. When you have nearly a 1000 kids all dressed in white with white covers on all with the same haircut, it easy to see how you could get confused. We had arranged for our son to meet us outside the bbig bay door on the right hand side as your walking out of it. There is a small plot of cement there and plenty of room for hugs from all that attend.

I was there for my son's graduation on 2/6/09 and the whole trip was great! Just a few ideas: we stayed at the Red Roof Inn just down the road from RTC. It ain't fancy, but it was clean, reasonably priced, and the staff was super. There is a Flannigan's restaurant and bar in the parking lot. The food is good and reasonable. I chose to hang out there a few nights after taking my son back, and bought (and had bought for me) a frosty beverage or two by a some A-school sailors. The hotel is only about a mile from the front gate. There are also several other restaurants right in that area. Just get there about 6:30 and you won't have long to wait in traffic or in line. You will sit for awhile, but if you've never been there before there is plenty to see while you wait. We flew in and rented a car, but if you don't know the area you will greatly benefit by having a GPS. You can take your own (as we did) or rent one from the rental company. Well worth any expense. We used it to find a mall and one really great Chicago style pizza place in downtown Chi-town with no problems finding the place or our way back. Also helped when time to go back to the airport. There is also a really cool wall at Soldier Field with not only a statue of a sailor and his family but also the Navy seal.....great photo op! I now have my son standing in uniform with a huge bronze Navy seal over his shoulder as my wallpaper on my work computer. There is plenty of ways to spend a day in Chicago....but be warned: the NEX is damn near impossible to navigate through after graduation!

In my two PIRs I saw everything from jeans and sneakers to three-piece suits....I'd say business casual is a good guide, but be aware of the weather....it can be very cold and being next to the lakes it is an unpleasant cold when the wind it up! Check weather.com often when a PIR approaches.......

Gary, they do enter by division number with the lowest div. number entering the graduation hall first. They space apart the div. alittle when marching in, so there is ample time to get pictures as they go by. They will march the entire length of the hall and will eventually end up in position in front of where you will be designated to sit. As you suggested, they will stand in formation according to their heights. I would recommend you go at least half way or more up the bleachers to have the best viewing for your son's div. as well as being able to see the other activities throughout the ceremony. I took my camcorder with me and was able to get closeups of Billy's entire div. and I recorded other portions of the PIR also. I would recommend you or Nicholas order the DVD of PIR from the Exchange. It's a special reminder and momento of this wonderful occasion.

PIR entrance. I know division seating will be marked. My question is the recruit entrance into the hall. Do they enter by division #, smallest or largest first. During the ceremony do they stand left to right smallest to largest? Just wondering. May help in locating the seats more easily.
